Letchworth III 1 Bishop's Stortford III 2
The 3s entertained their Bishop's Stortford counterparts, on Saturday, without 3 or 4 of their regular players but, nevertheless, the two teams seemed evenly matched at first. However, Letchworth should have taken an early lead when a couple of players failed to make contact with a pass across the face of an open goal. Having survived this scare, Stortford began to create chances of their own. Fortunately, the Letchworth defenders were alert to the danger and were able to see off the threat. Several raids down their own right wing followed, which led to penalty corner opportunities and the breakthrough eventually came from one of these strikes. Haidee Castle's shot took a deflection into the path of SUE SAUNDERS and, with a first time swing of her stick at waist height, she redirected the ball into the roof the net - surely a contender for goal of the season?! It looked as if Letchworth might take their one goal advantage into the break but, on the stroke of the half time, they conceded a penalty corner. Unable to clear their lines quickly enough, they watched the ball roll into goal.
A 1-1 scoreline gave both teams plenty to play for in the second half but it was Stortford who increasingly bossed the midfield. They seemed to find a spare player with relative ease & it wasn't too much of a surprise when they took the lead, again from a short corner. But for a couple of point blank saves from joint "Player of the Match" DANIELLE MALES & some long ball clearances from Haidee Castle & another joint "Player of the Match" NOLEEN POND, Letchworth might well have capitulated. However, it is not in their nature to surrender meekly and they continued to play with great effort & tenacity, exemplified by two other joint "Players of the Match" HARRIET RICHARDS & SHREYA SURESH. At no time were Stortford able to relax, as the 3s pushed for an equaliser. Unfortunately, Letchworth's final ball let them down and Stortford were able to return home with a 2-1 victory.
The result was probably a true reflection of the amount of possession each team had over the course of the game but Letchworth will hope that the return of 1 or 2 of this week's absentees, to face their own 4th XI next Saturday, will produce a more satisfying result.
