Tring II 1 Letchworth III 3
The 3s travelled to Tring on Saturday, hoping to do the double over a team struggling to avoid relegation. The omens were good after last week's hard fought draw and within 5 minutes of the start, Letchworth were 1-0 up. Having won the ball just inside her opponent's half, HARRIET RICHARDS stormed into the circle & smacked the ball into goal past the Tring 'keeper, who could only look on in despair.
The visitors continued to dominate possession and saw shots whizz past both posts. However, missed chances can be costly and sure enough, Tring scored an unlikely equaliser. After Letchworth's midfield were caught too square, followed by a rare mistimed tackle from "Player of the Match" HAIDEE CASTLE, Danielle Males was left far too exposed in goal. Tring's hard struck shot found the far corner, which might have put them back in the game but, within seconds, Letchworth were in front again through JO PINN, after she swept home a telling pass on the far post.
In the second half & now comfortably in control, Letchworth were able to rotate virtually their whole team but still maintain pressure on the Tring defence. As the match moved towards the final quarter, Letchworth won a penalty corner, from which DEBORAH WREN scooped the ball over the oncoming defenders. With no-one able to fend it away, the ball looped into goal & hit the backboard. Tring really had no answers but when they did threaten the visitors' goal, they were thwarted by some timely interceptions & tackles from Letchworth's energetic team.
An injury to Tara Belcher was the only worry for Letchworth & they will hope that she's fully recovered for the more difficult challenge next week, at home to their Bishop's Stortford counterparts - 11.00 start.
