Des talks drainage, forthcoming fixtures and the spirit of the game...

Letcombe Secretary and Physio Des Williams writes his regular column for the match programme. Here's what he had to say ahead of the 2-1 win over Cirencester Development as he talks drainage, upcoming fixtures and the spirit of the game...

"Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to Bassett Road. We would particularly like to welcome the players, officials and supporters of Cirencester Town Development. We were well beaten by a very good Cirencester team earlier in the season, so we will be looking for revenge today. A welcome also to our 3 match officials. We hope that you enjoy the game. As this is our first home game of 2015, we would also like to wish you all a very happy New Year.

Our game at Hook Norton last Saturday was postponed after heavy overnight rain. Indeed, not a single game was played in Division One West. With proper drainage installed about ten years ago, the Letcombe pitch was one of the few still playable, and our reserve match went ahead as scheduled. This is a great credit to our groundsman, Dennis Stock, and I know that he will have spent many hours during the last week repairing the damage so that today`s game can go ahead.

This is the first of five consecutive home games for our first team. The others are :

Sat 17th Jan v North Leigh Reserves cup 1.45
Sat 24th Jan v Clanfield league 2.15
Sat 31st Jan v Purton league 2.15
Sat 7th Feb v Shortwood United Reserves league 3.00

I feel sorry for Russell who has to produce programmes for all these games. If the weather does not intervene with any of the above matches, we will then only have one home fixture left to play.

We picked up a point in our last match on December 27th against Wantage Town reserves, but we should have collected all three having dominated the first half. Wantage fielded five lads who had played in their Southern League match the day before at Supermarine Sports. There is nothing in the rules to prevent this, but I feel that it is against the spirit of football at this level. When our first team did not have a game a few weeks ago, we still fielded our usual reserve team. We expect loyalty from the lads, so we must show the same loyalty to them."
