A Long Tradition On the Streets Of Preston

LEYLAND-PRESTON MORRIS LINKS

In April 2017 the present Leyland Morris Men celebrate 50 years of continuous dancing since it was reformed in 1966 and first danced out in 1967.

Leyland Morris Men was formed in 1889 and over the years has had considerable involvement with its neighbouring town of Preston. The first such occasion was in 1892 on June 25th when HRH the Duke of Edinburgh visited Preston to open the Albert Edward dock. A number of gentlemen met at the Stanley Arms to consider holding a festival to mark the visit – it would be a grand procession and Rose Festival.

Leyland Morris Men, under the leadership of Mr John Rose, took part in this procession from Strand Road to PNE’s ground at Deepdale. Despite the drenching and continuous rain the event was deemed a success with throngs of people on the streets and in Deepdale. The Preston Herald, on July 9th 1892, reported that the Morris dancers were so well received that efforts were to be made to establish a Preston team.

The present Leyland team has danced at the three Guilds of 1972, 1992 and 2012 and has taken part in many other Preston events. Some of the present team members danced at all three of these Guild processions. Preston Hospitals Fete was one of our early visits in 1968 and 1969 and St George’s shopping centre often saw the team performing in the 70’s. Many a clog has been ‘sparked’ on the Flag market and the Guild Hall has echoed to the sound of bells and sticks. The team has also performed at other notable town venues such as the docks, Avenham Park and West View leisure centre.

For folk not able to get out and see us then we have visited them to perform at such places as Little Sisters, Fulwood, Sherwood Court, Elsie Finney House and other nursing/rest homes.

The younger element have not been ignored and we have been into local Preston schools to do workshops with the children to introduce them to Morris dancing.

We remain open to all groups to showcase the North West tradition of Morris dancing.

We would dearly love to see the team continue for the next 50 years so if you are interested as either a dancer or musician please contact us at www.leylandmorrismen.com or email at mikepatbailey@btinternet.com.
