Mayfield opened the scoring when Leyland failed to deal with the kick off and Rochdale worked an overlap out wide. Leyland hit back after Dan Cragg and john cain
made good metres up the middle. The halves worked the ball quickly left and Connor Scrivens’ pass put Owen Pritchard into space and his neat change of direction put him under the sticks, with matt clegg
The Warriors then made a succession of errors early in the tackle count and failed to find touch from a penalty, which led to Mayfield scoring under the posts. Leyland still defended strongly, forcing an error and on the back of a strong carry from Adam Watkinson, Scrivens forced his way over in the right hand corner to score.
With Leyland pressing to take the lead, Rochdale intercepted and went almost the full length of the field and despite a superb cover tackle from Cal Jackson, Mayfield scored two tackles later to make it 16-10 to the visitors at half-time.
It was all Leyland after the break and the Warriors hit back with a well worked try for Clegg, after good hands again from Declan Roberts
and billy bishop
. Leyland then appeared to have taken the lead when another shift to the left saw Jacob Browne step back inside and dive over. Unbelievably, after awarding the try, the referee then changed his mind and went on to award Rochdale a penalty following the Warriors protestations.
The killer blow came on the next set when a huge dummy opened the Leyland line and despite some good scrambling defence, a good offload saw Mayfield add a completed try. The Warriors almost added further scores through Browne, Clegg and Scrivens but the final passes didn’t stick.
A harsh lesson learned today about patience in possession and building pressure. With 8 of today’s 17 players in their first season, it was a very inexperience Leyland line-up but with so many great athletes in the team, there are exciting times ahead.
