U14's - Report
Portico versus Leyland Warriors
We travelled to Portico Knowing we would have to be on our game against one of the top sides in the League this year
It was always going to be a hard ask for us but the weather made it more difficult than ever with driving rain coupled with a cold wind made it feel like the middle of January instead of a couple of days off the month of May .
The young Warriors were looking to make it 3 wins on the spin in the league however soon after the match started the warriors made a handling error the first of many during the game . this gave Portico the first chance to test the Warriors line which they did and went in for the first try of the game in the corner .
This once again during a game woke the young Warriors up and good yards made by Will Douglas , Rob Stack and Danny Wilkins set up the platform for James O’Neil to score to the right of the posts with Joe Weston converting this made it 4-6 to the Warriors .
Not long after Corey Dixon went close being bundled into touch with the line one or two metres in front of him .
The rain was getting harder and the wind seemed to be getting stronger , it was important for the warriors to keep hold of the ball at every opportunity as at times it was like a bar of soap .
The young warriors defended well against the Portico attack with Michael Stack , Matty Grayston and Jake Morton putting some good hits in .Nathan Burns was also putting a great shift in .
Not long later the ball was shifted to Wilkins who broke the line and raced in for the warriors second try of the game , it was converted yet again by Weston who was having a good game again in his now customary position at full back .
With Half time rapidly approaching some slack work in the defensive line Portico broke through and scored another try again though failing to convert …Virtually straight away the half time whistle blew .
It was cold and the guys were really cold they were physically shaking . One or two were quite unwell and feeling sick so were withdrawn and both subs were now on .
25 minutes remained but it was the Warriors who looked like they were up for the fight again with great runs by Douglas , Stack , Connor Sadler & Wilkins leading the line with Douglas revelling in his 2nd row running out wide , one particular run saw him go a full 30 yards with 4 players trying to stop him .
The second half was nearly over and no points had been scored with defences on top throughout when from his own half Douglas broke the line and touched down next to the posts ..This time the conversion was missed by O’Neil …This made the final score 8-16 to the Leyland Warriors .
This game was won with discipline and composure, respecting the Ball in these conditions was vitally important and was executed very well ..
Well the Warriors adventure continues , we are up to joint 2nd in the table the hard work doesn’t stop here the work will get harder the job isn’t done yet . See you all at training on Wednesday night . Remember everyone played their part in this game each one of you is as important to the team as the next man . We the coaching staff are very proud of your efforts you were all winners today.
Man of the Match went to Will Douglas
Top Tackler went to Danny Wilkins
