Leyland Warriors 24 - Bamber Bridge Bulldogs 8
A very polished performance today as the lads took the spoils in the South Ribble derby.
The Warriors started with some strong defence in centre field as both sides settled into the game, pressuring the Brig carriers into drifting sideways and limiting their yardage.
A strong carry from Nathan Power earned a quick play the ball and Danny Wilkins spotted a gap on the right. He fended away from a couple of players before racing down the touchline, arcing back to score under the posts, giving Joe Weston an easy conversion. Leyland continued to attack with confidence and strong running saw Joe Kirkby go close to scoring on two occasions.
Brig continued to run towards the edges but some excellent tackling from Michael Stack and Matthew Grayston kept them at bay and on the back of this defence Robert Stack made a storming break down field. From this, James O'Neill and Nathan Burns moved the ball quickly to the right and Jake Morton stepped back inside on a great line to crash over next to the sticks, Weston again converting.
The Bulldogs continued to press but the Warriors tackled well and worked hard from marker. When Brig did manage to break the Warriors line just before half-time, Weston made a textbook tackle from fullback.
Strong carries from Wilkins and Will Douglas took Leyland up to halfway before Robert Stack powered onto the ball, breaking several tackles and fending the fullback to race clear for a try, Weston again adding the extras.
Leyland's tackling remained impressive, with a huge shot from Robert Stack forcing a turnover and on the next tackle, Wilkin burst onto the ball and shrugged off the defenders before sprinting under the posts to make Weston's kick a formality.
With just a few minutes to go, the Bulldogs made a break and squeezed over for a try in the corner. From the restart, a couple of silly penalties set up the position for the Bulldogs to score a further consolation try in the dying seconds.
A composed performance from the young Warriors who dominated the vast majority of the game but must remember to keep focussed right up to the final whistle.
