New balls please as Turbo-charged seconds finish on a high

Lightcliffe second team’s season ended on a curate’s egg.

There was some amazing highs and depressing lows over the 48 hours.

On Saturday, the fine total of 224 against a useful Hanging Heaton side looked like it would be enough. The foundations were built around Gregsey Godfrey and Michael Brooke who both made half centuries.

Useful contributions from Rhyso Jowett and Richard Thompson kept up the momentum and ensured the two’s went into the tea-room happy. After an excellent tea – still the best on the circuit – the fired up bowlers ripped into the Heaton top order.

Veteran Roger Stead and young Dan Ahmed bowled in tandem to get seven wickets between them and leave the visitors reeling on 56-7. What happened than could only be described as astonishing – or agonising if you were an LCC fan. An amazing eight wicket partnership of 150 put Heaton back in the game and helped secure them an unlikely victory.

After the game Liam Collins said: “that was one of my lowest moments in cricket. The game was there to be won, and we blew it. We will learn from the experience and come back stronger and better next year. If Turbo Tesseyman had been playing and using a new ball we would have walked it.”

Sunday was another day, and on a bowling green outfield and lightening fast wicket, skipper Michael Brooke called right and had no hesitation in having a bat. He then got his sun cream and shorts out and relaxed for the afternoon, as the batters put willow to leather and hit the balls to all parts of the Gomersal ground.

Chrissy-Chrissy Dyer took full advantage of conditions to hit a superb 80, which included eight boundaries. He was backed up by some classical cricket from Brucie Lunn, who hit a neat 70. There was more to come, with Richard Thompson, Seraj Hussain, Sir Marcus of Kelly, Patrick Wild and Liam Collins all joining in the fun. An excellent total of 266.

The seconds also had a brand new ball to go out with, which delighted pace ace Richard Tessyman. He made full use of the shiny red, swinging it much more than the older, more worn balls he is used to. His high energy opening spell laid the foundations for victory.

An excellent spell of bowling from Mark Whiley – four wickets – and Dan Ahmed – also four wickets – helped secure a superb victory and bring down the curtain on a fine season. Richard Tesseyman said: “The victory was secondary for me. I had my eye on the Bradford League prize and for the skipper not to bring me back on was disappointing and demoralising. If we’d had a new ball, I would have got at least five wickets. The heartache will last long into the winter months for me. I feel I have been run out on 99”.
