Nothing Jammy about Hartley's knock after Thommy's marathon effort

Lightcliffe progressed smoothly to the quarter final of the Sovereign Health Care Priestley Shield with an emphatic victory over near neighbours Hartshead Moor.

Put into bat the Wakefield Roaders made an impressive start with Rhys Jowett and keeper Chris Dyer putting together 60 at over four an over before Dyer chipped to mid on.

Captain for the day Bruce Lunn joined Jowett who was stumped off a Jeff Wind wide soon after for a fluent 36. Siraj Hussain chipped in with swashbuckling 26 until adjudged caught behind off young leg spinner Myles Brooke who took a second when Lunn holed out to deep mid wicket when he could have chosen anywhere else.

This brought together club chairman Steve Hartley (43) and Richard Thompson (41), fresh from a Manchester 10k run earlier in the day. Their experience showed as they took the attack to the Hartshead bowlers and added 89 at more than a run a ball.

Both played shots all round the wicket to take the game away from the visitors and set up youngster Patrick Wild (10), James Godden (16no) and Marcus Kelly (10) to push the total to an impressive 250 for 9 in 50 overs.

Godden started the Lightcliffe defence in perfect fashion as he removed Lawrence Brooke’s middle pole with a first ball unplayable inswinging yorker. This paved the way for seasonal debutant Roger Stead, now in his seventh decade, to put the match out of Moor’s reach with a typically accurate ten overs spell taking 2 for 18.

When the visitor’s top scorer Mick Baldwin was run out with a direct hit by Hartley that surprised many the Hartshead were struggling at 61 for 4. Bring on the young spin triplets, Hussain, Kelly and Dani Ahmed, who bowled with great control and skill to finish the job with three, one and two wickets respectively to leave Hartshead well short on just 1342 all out.

Skipper Lunn was delighted with the performance. “We dominated with bat and ball and our mixture of youth and experience worked together well. With five or six key players to come back into the reckoning we look forward to the quarter final with some confidence” he said.
