No season finale for 17s
Lightcliffe u17s 67-8 lost to Blackley 68-0 by 10 wickets
Tuesday 31st July 2018. Halifax Junior Cricket Under 17s Collinson Cup Group D
Lightcliffe Under 17s rounded off their season with another defeat, but the result was tempered yet again, by fielding another young team consisting as it did of five under 13s (two on debut) and three Under 15s.
Asked to bat on a pitch unplayable due to rain 24 hours earlier, the residual moisture gave Blackley’s strong bowling attack plenty of assistance.
The backbone of the innings was a 26 partnership of Ben Whiteley and Toby Morley. Forced to grind out runs, it took the left hander until the 12th over to unleash 4 boundaries in his 23 total, whilst Morley’s 9 runs and stoic defence, shouldn’t be criticised for crease occupation, where his colleagues found it equally hard to thrive.
Debutants Curtis Taylor showed glimpses of potential and Joel Holmes let no one down despite injury.
The total was never going to challenge Blackley, but frustratingly captain James Lunn, couldn’t find the right formula with the resources at his disposal with the ball to grab wickets. With shots failing to find a fielder, Robbie Heath was the pick of the bowling.
The season peaked too soon for the 17s, with their opening game victory, but highs have been the performance of some of the youngest players, a near miss of a tie at Sowerby in an exciting match and valuable experience which should put the21 players who turned out the for team, in better shape for next season.
