3rd's fail to catch Copley
Lightcliffe 3rd XI 202-10 lost to Copley 3rdXI 240-7 by 38 runs
Halifax Sunday League Division One - Sunday 20th May 2018
Lightcliffe were the creators of their own downfall in their first League fixture as a sub standard display in the field allowed Copley to build an unassailable total.
The lack of suitable footwear for one Lightcliffe’s younger bowlers (now of an age when packing his own bag is mandatory) set the tone and perhaps the focus in the field could have been greater.
A plethora of extras and dropped catches too numerous to describe allowed the home side to score probably 60 runs more than could have been expected.
Despite runs being conceded quickly, initially Lightcliffe had success as 2 successive LBW decisions for Mark Whiley looked to have rocked Copley.
Thereafter Ali for the home side found his opponents in benevolent mood, spilling at least 5 chances in a 100 partnership with Smith.
Lightcliffe wilted in the heat and concentration levels were low, although captain Bruce Lunn set the standards with 3 catches to put a veneer of gloss on an otherwise session to forget.
Lunn and Jordan Pickles responded well with the bat, building momentum as they opened with a 138 stand of their own and for a while a rally seemed possible.
When the captain was unfortunately stumped for 47 and Pickles career best 86 was ended with a good catch, the effects of strength-sapping heat on Lightcliffe’s thinner batting depth was revealed.
Only Joshua Booth’s 30 provided much hope of resurrection, but the side finished comfortably short.
