3rds field new youth at Fields
Lightcliffe 3rd XI 96-10 lost to Northowram Fields 200-8 by 104 runs
Halifax Sunday League Division One - Sunday 3rd June 2018
Lightcliffe fielding a young and inexperienced side put up a performance better than the scoreline suggests, where a single innings was the difference between the teams.
Josh Booth at 16 was the backbone of a youthful quartet of bowlers, with 13 year old debutants Dylan Hill and Toby Morley plus a regular this season James Lunn (not yet 15).
They were resilient against older opponents in whom opener Bottomley dominated with a century, in what was the critical innings in the game.
It was thus a credit for the side to take 8 wickets with no other home batsmen scoring 15. 11 year old Ben Ward as wicket keeper took 2 catches and another new face this season Bradley Atkinson (14) contributing, to reinforce the fact that the club has promise to come.
Unfortunately the side couldn’t match their performance with the bat, slumping to 27-5 before veteran David Heath (40 – runs, not age) and Lunn (20) restored some pride.
Incongruous in the debutants list was Mark Ward. Conceding a good quarter of a century to his younger peers and digging out mothballed cricket kit last worn 5 years previous, he steamed in with venom and rosy cheeks during his 5 over spell.
With bat in hand, having observed Lightcliffe’s Peter Pan Heath construct an innings that punished a mixed bag of missiles faced, Ward’s single ball cameo was cruelly cut short by an inability to identify the straight delivery.
The 3rds thus have a bank of willing juniors who will benefit from the experience and come good in time.
