Youthful 3rds made to sweat on Gala Day
Lightcliffe 3rd XI 159-10 lost to Mytholmroyd 270-7 by 111 runs
Halifax Sunday League Division One - Sunday 8th July 2018
Lightcliffe with their annual Village Gala on the cricket ground, fielded another very young side containing 8 players of 20 or under, and came up short against a fully adult and more powerful Mytholmroyd team.
The game was played at the neutral venue of Greetland Cricket Ground, and the official “visitors” had some initial success with Mytholmroyd kept in check by opening seamers Josh Booth and Mark Whiley, who along with Ben Stringer took a wicket apiece.
The game turned heavily against Lightcliffe thereafter, as 220 runs were conceded from only 25 overs as their larger more powerful opponents utilized the compact ground to great effect, with the quartet of slow bowlers bearing the brunt of a weighty assault.
Lightcliffe’s batting has been the element most hit by injuries and non availability this season, so credit to the very youthful unit, who with the average age in the top 8 batsmen being just 16 (in a range of 12 to 24) were never subdued.
Unfortunately the cameos were not of sufficient scale to make an impact, although Ben Whiteley, William Leach and Josh Booth all finished equal highest scorer with 27 apiece.
Those in the know recognise this is a transitional season for the Sunday team and as always the eye is on the future of the club.
