A first-half penalty from Andy Toyne and a clinical header from sub Matt Cotton secured a 2-1 win for the Whites over Frickley Athletic on Saturday.

United boss, Sam Wilkinson said: “Obviously we are really pleased with the three points. The lads were really good today.

“I thought they showed their character and the desire to win the game.

“We lacked a little bit of quality which is understandable with the run we've been on, but it was more about fighting and trying to keep it tight today.

“I thought our formation worked and we defended really well.

“We put bodies on the line. I thought the back five were exceptional and I thought Phil McGann in goal played a part in that too.

“It was a workman-like performance and that's what we needed.

“We've been on a poor run and needed to get the three points.

“The big difference today was that we defended better than of late and managed to score two goals.

“Overall our play this season has been pretty good. It's just that the problem has been in both boxes which today we put right.

“It's a massive weight off our shoulders but let's not get carried away.

“The win will give us more belief that we can actually put a run together.

“At the end of the day it's one win and we need to back it up and do it for the next few games.

“It was more about the whole team and showed the desire to get the win.

“To show the character and score the winning goal was great.”
