The Whites opened brightly and were rocked by yet another early concession when the lively Sam Macvicar, cashed in on a misunderstanding between Dave Hone and Joe Butler in the 11tth minute. United didn’t panic and gradually got a foot hold in the game. Phil McGann produced a great save just before the interval and the Whites were a little unfortunate to go in behind at half-time.
From the re-start United were lively and on 48 minutes Daniel Fletcher, Carlton’s left-back dwelt on the ball and the alert Josh Raby robbed him on the half-way line, he cut inside and drilled home in the far bottom corner with his left foot.
The Whites went up another gear and at this stage they ere controlling the game. A series of half breaks came to nought before Chris Funnell
broke clear on the left, he released Nathan Adams who was just outside him and Adams made no mistake to give United the lead in the 58th minute.
Adams did brilliantly a few minutes later when he hit the post from a narrow angle.
Then with Carlton running out of ideas we were pegged back. Following a half cleared set piece, Carlton’s centre half struck an unstoppable shot from 25yards which thundered into the top corner to sink the hearts of United’s followers.
Again the side didn’t panic but some basic errors would cost them dear. In the 87th minute some great defending by Joe Butler saw the Whites regain possession and Chris Funnell
did brilliantly to back his team-mate up but then committed the cardinal sin of getting caught too close to his own goal. Josh Raby blocked the cross but did the same thing, instead of clearing his lines he gifted possession back. From the resulting cross , Phil McGann made a double save in the ensuing scramble as United threw bodies in the way but were powerless to stop Ryan Whitehurst giving Carlton an unlikely lead.
Right on time David Coyde brought the ball out of defence andt with only seconds remaining he should have been sending the ball towards his strikers but he chose to dribble and the evert alert Rube Wiggins-Thomas wasn’t going to let that opportunity go begging and he stuck the knife firmly in United’s hearts.
