First Team - Report
|Sutton Coldfield Town||2||vs||2||Lincoln United|
UNITED MAKE A POINT AT SUTTON
United were searching for their first ever point against Sutton Coldfield having been well beaten on both occasions last season following the home sides’ move to the Evo-Stik League.
True, they were up against a team in the play-off shake up, but played throughout the game with no fear.
We had the lions’ share of possession in the early stages without troubling the home keeper and it was Sutton Coldfield who had the games first real chance . The half progressed in the same fashion and by half-time we could say that we had more of the ball but Sutton made more of it when they had it.
United were defending well and Phil McGann was in composed form.
It all changed just after half-time when, in the 47th minute, a beautifully weighted free-kick was met by United’s man-of-the Match, Sean Wright who finished with a neat volley.
As the second period developed it became an intriguing game with both sides carrying a goal threat. David Coyde had his “A” game in place to cope with the dangerous Matt Dodd and the introduction of James Reid for Sutton gave them more of a threat.
However, for United, the hard-working Alex Troughton, Tom Garrick and Kallum Smith all dovetailed around Craig Leverett who led our line superbly.
Brendan McDaid and Jack McGovern provided the platform in midfield and we were witnessing a real contest.
In the 61st minute Sutton equalised when Matthew Dodd found himself free to convert. Unied responded quickly and two minutes later Tom Garrick broke clear down the left, opened his body up and slid the ball into the far corner.
Still the game ebbed and flowed and it was a Sutton’s pace that set up their 90th minute equailser, a cut-back from the by-line found James Reid unmarked and he made no mistake.
It was United who finished the stronger forcing a couple of corners and two half chances as the added time drew to a close.
The lads can say that everyone who took part played their part in a performance based on a strong back-four and an organised keeper, Phil McGann with the other six all having an impact. Too often this season we have a couple of players in each game not contributing but not today.
