Liskeard-Looe 39 v Tavistock 0

The Lions hit Tavistock for six

Last Saturday The Lions played their first home league match welcoming Tavistock to Lux Park and Liskeard started welcome putting pressure on the Tavistock defence and put points on the board after five minutes, courtesy of the boot of scrum half Ieuan Evans, from a penalty awarded for a high tackle. In the eleventh minute the visitors put in a clearance kick that was gathered by Liskeard to send full back Jordan Smith through who popped a pass to Evans who went in for an unconverted try. On twenty minutes Liskeard were awarded a second penalty, this time for holding on, but unfortunately Evans was off target with his attempt at goal. Then in the twentieth minute, from a scrum inside the home half of the field, young Lions fly half, Oliver Aggiss, put in a kick ahead and right wing James Rogers chased this down and with a superb pick up raced in from the Tavistock twenty-two to touch down for a try that was converted by Evans to take the score to 15-0 at the half-time whistle; an excellent half of rugby for Liskeard.
Into the second half and it was more of the same with Liskeard on top and an excellent passing move, by the home backs, led to a try by prolific scorer winger Billy Edwards; but the conversion attempt was wayward. On fifty minutes Liskeard were awarded another penalty but this was also missed. In the seventieth excellent play, involving both forwards and backs, Liskeard went further ahead with the bonus point try by centre Kieran Knight and even with another missed conversion the score was then 25-0. Three minutes later “Tavy” kick ahead and Rogers gathered this and then fed Smith to make the initial break and Smith popped a pass to Aggiss for the latter to run in for a try that he converted himself. In the closing stages Tavistock started an attack, but this was stopped when the Liskeard pack turned the ball over and released the backs for Edwards to run in for his second try and this was converted by Aggiss for a final score of 39-0. The reasonably big, largely partisan, crowd had been entertained by the attacking flair of Liskeard and also their miserly defence that had prevented the visitors from posting any points. Also on Saturday Liskeard fielded a second XV, for the first time in quite a few years, against their counterparts from Saltash, in a rearranged fixture, in Plymouth Combination’s Armada league, after Tavistock 2nds cried off on Thursday from the original fixture; a very good day at the office for Liskeard.
