Looking back, much of a day was a blur. A resilient Newhaven side battled hard and took an early two-goal lead. It looked as though we'd thrown the title away. "I always knew we'd win 3-2 after we went two goals down," said manager Mark Bennett after the match.

But news soon filtered through that our nearest rivals, Dorking Wanderers, were also losing 1-0 away at Arundel. For the SCFL officials, they didn't know where to go with that prestigious trophy...

Littlehampton Town managed to claw a goal back, only for Newhaven to score again. 3-1 down. Misery sunk in, particularly when Dorking equalised. We'd come so far, but could we really fall at the last hurdle?

Then drama. Full-on attack from the magnificent Marigolds. We got another goal back. 3-2. Then a penalty in the final ten minutes. What pressure on the Supporters' Player of the Year and the top goal scorer in the league: George Landais.

Yet, with all the pressure, he coolly put the penalty away to level the score to 3-3. A draw would be enough, if Dorking were also drawing (which they were). But then... Arundel scored against Dorking. 2-1. Only a miracle could stop us winning the title now.

At the final whistle there were scenes of jubilation and relief. Twenty-four years after Littlehampton Town's only other success in the competition and they finally had achieved it again! Champions of Division One on the last day of the season and the last time the league will be known as the Sussex County League.

The players and management were presented with their winners' medals and trophy on The Sportsfield pitch and wild celebrations followed late into the night in The Sportsman bar.
