TREVOR EXLEY

As part of our Centenary Celebrations at Liversedge, we were particularly delighted to hear from Trevor Exley. Some of you may remember that his son contacted us last year to let the Club know about Trevor’s 65th birthday last April. We were delighted to put a piece in the programme about Trevor and his birthday. Well now, Trevor has taken the time to send us some of his memories of Clayborn and playing at Liversedge.

I was sixty five in April (2009) but still have happy memories of matches played at Clayborn. I first played there in 1958, for Spen Valley Boys against Halifax Boys, being lucky enough to score in a 2-2 draw. We lost the replay 0-1 at the Shay.

I first played for Liversedge in 1967, making my debut in a West Riding County Amateur League match against Rawdon Old Boys. Coming from T.S. Harrisons in the Spen Valley League, it was a big step up in standard. At that time, Liversedge and Brook Sports (at Staincliffe) were the two big clubs. I was in awe of the Liversedge Legends at the time. Tommy Harland, our captain, Len Thomas, who would have made it in higher class football, Barry Palmer, Brian Watson, and many others! Austen Collier was the manager at the time.

T.S.Harrisons had won the Spen Valley League and Cup double the previous year so three of use were asked to move to Liversedge. Denis Charlesworth, the best heard of a ball I ever played with, Mick Perrier, a really gifted ex-Bradford City apprentice and myself. I enjoyed my time at Liversedge and will try to take in a match in this, the clubs Centenary year, and maybe meet a few of the older members.

They were happy days, spent playing the game we all love, with a great set of lads. Best regards to all the ex-players.

PS. I have spent the last 40 years in Torquay, Devon. I worked at the Palm Court Hotel for 16 years, 3 in the Devonport Arms in Paignton and the last 21 years in the Lord Nelson, Kingskerswell. I have also seen Huddersfield Town on 99 grounds – Always a Terrier.

Best Wishes

Trevor Exley.

If you have your own memories of Clayborn or Liversedge, the club would be delighted to hear from you, as part of our Centenary Celebrations.
