Another 3 points on the road: report by G Lister

Flint Town United v Llandudno

Llandudno continued their travels with an away game on Wednesday evening at Flint.
This was another good performance from Llandudno who continue their good start to the season and beat a Flint team who had also won their first two league games. This was as expected a tough game for Llandudno as you always get when you play Flint and to come away with another victory was just about justified as they created the better opportunities in the match

Alan Morgan made changes to his squad following Saturday’s game at Rhydymwyn with Lee Craven and Connor Shackleton coming in and James Joyce being unavailable. Jake Phillips started at right back in place of Joyce and Dean Seager started at centre forward for Marc Evans otherwise the starting line up was the same as started on Saturday.

The Flint pitch was not conducive to good football and the game started with both teams attempting to turn the opposition defenders. The first half chance fell to Flint following hesitation by Connor Wearing in the Llandudno goal but Tom Dix stepped in to clear the ball.

It took Llandudno 10 minutes to create their first opening when Toby Jones broke down the right, cut inside and fired over the bar, now with the midfield starting to control the game Danny Hughes sent Toby Jones through, Toby took the ball around the goal-keeper but he delayed taking a shot and a Flint defender makes a block, this is quickly following by Dean Seager shooting straight at the Flint keeper from just inside the penalty box. Another chance was wasted when from an excellent cross by Connor Tierney, Gaz Evans out jumps the Flint defender at the far post but puts his header over the bar. Flint’s only real response to this pressure was when a back header from a chip into the box drifts narrowly wide of the goal, Llandudno response to this Flint effort sees both Tom Dix and Danny Hughes having efforts go wide of the Flint goal, after 35 minutes played Llandudno should be in front.

After 39 minutes Flint are awarded a free kick 30 yards out when the referee adjudges that Mark Orme fouls a Flint forward who appeared to be backing into him and following Orme’s comments to the referee he is shown a yellow card. The subsequent free kick is cleared by Llandudno and reaches Toby Jones who beats his marker, cuts into the penalty box and squares the ball to Dean Seager who shots passed the Flint goal keeper to put Llandudno ahead.

The response from Flint was very quick and following a corner and subsequent header the ball was cleared off the Llandudno goal line and the follow up shot gets blocked and then cleared out of defence to gain a throw in. The referee then shows Jake Phillips a yellow card for time wasting when taking a throw in.

Half time Flint 0-1 Llandudno.

Flint started the second half as they did the first by putting pressure on Llandudno back four. Flint were quicker to the ball and Llandudno were slow in adjusting to the pressure but as in the first half they started to get the upper hand and they created the first chance of the half after 52 minutes when Gaz Evans shot straight at the goal keeper after being put clear of the Flint defence.

During the next 10 minutes Eddie Jebb goes down injured twice and is replaced by Lee Thomas, in this period Llandudno are seeing a lot of the ball but are not creating any real openings. The highlight of the first 20 minutes of the second half was the ball distribution by Connor Wearing in the Llandudno goal on four occasions he kicks the ball out of his hand straight to the feet of a Llandudno forward in the opponents half which enables his team to start their attacks higher up the field.

The game 10 minutes sees the game being played mostly in midfield but then sloppy defending by Llandudno defenders does allow Flint shots at goal, none of which cause Connor Wearing any problems, with the closest being a shot which he watches go into his side netting.

With 15 minutes of the game remaining both managers now make substitutions with Lee Craven replacing Toby Jones then a few minutes later Marc Evans replaces Dean Seager. The Flint substitute Jon Rush is immediately booked for making contact with the head of Arran Pritchard who requires attention.

With seven minutes remaining Llandudno neat passing allowed Tom Dix a shot at goal which goes wide of the post, this is followed by a counter attack by Flint with the referee giving a foul on the edge of the penalty box against Arran Pritchard when the Flint attacker who was once again backing into the Llandudno defender. The subsequent free kick goes straight at the Llandudno wall and the danger is immediately cleared.

The balance of the game was played mostly in the Llandudno half with Flint throwing everything at Llandudno without creating any clear cut chances.

Final score Flint 0-1 Llandudno.
