The Llanelli Warriors have had a major boost ahead of their 20th anniversary season in the shape of a new kit sponsored by Perthyn.
Both parties feel the sponsorship is a good fit. Perthyn are a Welsh company (although they provide services in England too) that have provided support for people with a learning disability in the Llanelli area for 20 years.
Warriors Chairman Gwilym Lewis said “I think it’s a mark of the Warriors progress that we’ve attracted such a company. Perthyn’s name comes from the principal that everybody belongs to the community, and should have opportunities to build relationships and play an active role within it. These are things that the Warriors also value highly. You can’t get much more active than playing rugby and there’s no better place to earn respect. The relationships within the team are important. This makes Perthyn and the Warriors a great ethical fit and a sponsor we can feel comfortable wearing.”
Gareth Matthews from Perthyn said “We can see that the Warriors are giving something that isn’t often offered to people with a learning disability – the chance to play a hard physical game in an integrated setting where people are judged on their ability to play rugby rather than having a disability.
We have had great support from the community through volunteering projects we have been involved in and are happy to give something back. Perthyn are also celebrating our 20th anniversary this year, and we hope that this sponsorship will not only help the Warriors but also raise awareness of the work we do in the community and the employment opportunities we provide. As a company we are about challenging preconceptions so people who see and understand what the Warriors are doing will see us in that light as well”
The Warriors formed in 1995 have played across the UK and even as far as New Zealand. They have been instrumental in sides in Yorkshire, Scotland and Shropshire forming and hope to continue to encourage others.
The kit proved lucky for the Warriors when they started the season on a winning note with triumph over Burry Port in the Origin Cup. The Warriors next fixture is on October 25th against Swansea Vikings at Burry Port RFC, Kick Off 1:30pm
