Match Report by 'Statto'

After losin their opening pre-season friendly 2-5 away to Ellesmere Rangers on Thursday 11th July, Llanfyllin Town suffered their second friendly defeat as they lost 2-4 away to Mercian League Premier Division Side Weston Rhyn at Recreation Ground on Saturday 20th Jult.

Town fielded a side containing 8 players aged under 18, but despite this defeat, Benji Evans' side took plenty of positives out of a game that was played as 3 periods of 30 minues.

The 1st chance came to the visitors in the 6th minute when Rhyn keeper Paul Norris' short goal kick to Mike Jones was intercepted by Zakh Ward whose shot was saved by the now recovered keeper for a corner.

Rhyn took the lead in the 8h minute when Gwyn Davies fed Tom Jones on the Right who Turned his man before sending a superb defence-splitting pass to Chris Bishop who fired a right footed angled drive from just inside the right corner of the box into LLanfyllin keeper Tom Roberts' right hand corner.

Llanfyllin equalised in the 20th minute when Ward won a challenge in midfield and turned before beating 2 men and sidefooting past advancing Rhyn keeper from the edge of the box into the right hand corner.

The last main chance of the first period came Rhyn's way in the 20th minute when Guy Guifold had his left foot shot saved by Roberts.

The first chance of the second period came the visitors way in the 37th minute when Ward's right foot shot from inside the right hand corner of the box was held by Morris.

A good chance came Rhyn's way a minute later when Steve Benyon's through ball found Chris Cathrall who was Challenged by Roberts and the Ba==ball ran to Callum Vaughan who shot wide.

A golden chance came Rhyn's way in the 46th minute when Williams' through ball found Bishop whose effort was blocked by Roberts and the ball ran to Guilford who somehow fired over from inside the 6 yard box.

The hosts regained the lead just a minute later when Benyon fed Guilford on the left who ran into the box before crossing for Bishop to tap in from 6 yards at the far post.

Then at the other end in the 52nd minute, Steve Morris sent a 25 yard free kik=ck wide of keeper Morris' right hand post.

At the same end a minute later, Craig Scott played a one-two with Ward before feeding Brian Wood on the right who ran into the box and crossed to the far post where Scott's shot was well paried to his right by Morris.

It was 3-1 in the 65th minute when sub Callum Williams crossed from the left to the far post where Benyon pulled the ball back to Bishop who fired a low right foot drive past sub keeper Josh Astley into his left hand corner to complete a hat-trick.

Llanfyllin pulled one back in the 85th minute when sub Martin Phillips' through ball down the middle found Scott and as Rhyn appealed for offside , the club assistant referee's flag correctly stayed down with defender Mike Jones playing him on and Scott ran on before superbly lobbing Morris from 25 yards.

It was 4-2 just a minute later when Guilford ran down the left before crossing to the far post where Bishop tapped in from 5 yards to complete a quadruple and condemn Town to their second pre-season defeat.
