HALKYN UNITED 2

LLANGOLLEN TOWN 5

THERE was another home defeat for United to contend with over the weekend.

While Manchester United were surprisingly slipping up in their encounter with West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford, Halkyn United were being knocked out of the Welsh Trophy by Llangollen Town.

This result wasn’t that much of a shock, though, as Gareth Lloyd’s Llan maintained their excellent start to the season.

Llan came storming out of the blocks and they built up a three-goal lead by the time the interval arrived.

The visitors had lift-off when Sam Marrs opened the scoring on 26 minutes, firing home from an acute angle after Ian Grindley played a superb through ball from the back.

Mark Lunt extended the lead with a close-range effort after some great work from Tryfan Prosser.

It was Jordan Dooley who scored the third when he cut in from the right and his shot was deflected past Ryan Roberts in the Halkyn goal .

Things got even better for Llan when they made it 4-0 just minutes after the restart.

Lunt released Marrs with a superb reverse pass and the latter made no mistake from close range.

After such a lively first 50 minutes, the visitors eased off slightly and Halkyn started to look very threatening.

United reduced the deficit with two quick goals to set up an edgy last quarter-of-an-hour.

Llangollen weren’t about to relinquish their advantage, though, and Ben Wilson - on his return from a short spell at Chirk AAA - put the tie beyond doubt when he beat the offside trap and netted at the second attempt after seeing his first effort blocked .

In the next round, Llangollen will travel to Welshpool.
