The U8s put in a committed performance for the whole 20 minutes and it was just as well as Milford Haven had also raised their game considerably from the 2 sides’ previous encounter.
From the first kick off, Llangwm made their intent very obvious, as they defended superbly. Everywhere a Milford Haven player ran, there seemed to be a black and amber wall. Rhys, Lucas and Sam made complete nuisances of themselves at every Milford Haven kick off, getting right up into their opponents’ faces, forcing them to run backwards, and ensuring the gain line was rarely crossed. The Wasps’ aggressive defence regularly turned the opposition over, an impressive feat given just how good an attacking side this Milford Haven team are.
A great change of direction by Owain set up Dylan nicely for the game’s opening try, while Lewis Y and Joe both had opportunities to break through in the first half but were unlucky to lose their tags. All the boys were showing a real hunger to get involved and make a contribution, and the injuries to James and Oliver were evidence of their efforts and commitment.
When these teams met 2 weeks ago, the Milford Haven no. 10 had run rings around the Wasps. Today he was very well marked for that reason and for the most part the boys succeeded in keeping him at bay – however he only had to get the ball in his hands once in space and he was away to equalise, against the run of play. This gave the visitors a real boost and they started to put together some great moves and demonstrated some wonderful offloading – thankfully they were unable to score thanks to some fantastic last ditch tagging by Arwyn, Dom, Dylan and Owain.
With the score level at 1-1 at half time, there was great confidence that the boys would profit from playing downhill in the second half and so it proved. Owain was once again the try creator as he did a fabulous switch pass that nobody saw coming, except for Joe who was running the perfect line to take it. This marvellous piece of skill totally wrong footed the visitors’ defence and Joe’s resulting try put Llangwm ahead again.
Once again though Milford Haven equalised after an excellent individual run by their no. 10 (who else?!) who somehow managed to evade the 3 Wasps that were marking him. The Mariners could have taken the lead shortly afterwards when they turned over the 6 tags and started to break out of their own half. Fortunately Rhys, who took lots of tags today in a notable defensive display, forced their player to run into touch.
Llangwm now started to string some passing movements together and the Milford Haven defence was made to work hard, as both Lewis W and Joe went close to scoring. The winning try finally came when Arwyn made a break through the middle and then offloaded to Dylan who set off on a mazy run to see the Wasps safely home, and the reaction of the players as the final whistle said it all.
This is the first time these boys have had back to back wins since October 2010 and to gain the victory against a team as spirited, committed and skilful as this Milford Haven side is a great achievement – well done boys.
