As is often the case with U7s, both teams lacked composure and focus at times, but in the end Haverfordwest managed to string together enough opportunities in the final few minutes to secure a comfortable win.

From the very start, Haverfordwest looked dangerous, and scored the opening try within seconds of the kick off. Pleasingly Llangwm responded well and from their own tap kick, 2 quick passes saw the ball reach Owen who beat several defenders with an excellent run to equalise for the home team.

Haverfordwest were quick to retake the lead as one of their players, the smallest on the pitch, stunned everyone with a fabulous solo try that saw him run clean through the middle of pretty much the whole Llangwm team without any of them managing to lay a finger on him. At 2-1 to Haverfordwest with barely 2 minutes gone, it looked like we were in for a high scoring feast of tries.

Instead both teams switched off and there followed a string of errors that led to squandered opportunities and disallowed tries. Haverfordwest mounted a series of attacks but one was foiled by Charlie who forced their player into touch, while 2 tags in quick succession by Lucas put paid to another. Another 3 opportunities by the away side were blown by hand offs that were easily spotted by referee Graham; who also disallowed a Llangwm try after Fletcher, who had made a brilliant run to the tryline, went off his feet in placing the ball down. Haverfordwest then had another effort disallowed because their player’s tag had fallen off, a problem that also blighted Llangwm all morning. Indeed it caused Finn, who had already had one try disallowed after he failed to hear the referee’s whistle, to have to be called back after making a good run because he had lost a tag.

With both sides failing to take their chances it remained 2-1 to Haverfordwest until near the end. It looked as though Llangwm were going to equalise when great interplay by Fletcher and Lucas took the Wasps up to a few metres from the Blues’ tryline, but Haverfordwest were able to take all 6 tags bringing the passage of play to an end. From this position, the Blues mounted an effective counter attack and although Fletcher superbly chased down and tagged the player who looked likely to score, another Haverfordwest player scored from the resulting offload.

At 3-1 down Llangwm started to tire and found themselves running back on themselves up the slope through energy sapping mud to vainly chase the Blues very fast strike runners. Two late tries by Haverfordwest put something of a gloss on the scoreline for them but nobody could deny that it was a fair result.
