Llanhilleth Athletic recently held their annual presentation evening at the Top Hotel,
Llanhilleth celebrating one of the clubs most successful seasons in its history.
Athletic secured the runners-up spot in the Gwent County Second Division and will play next
season at a level never previously achieved.
Speaking at the event team manager Chris Townsend said:” I am really pleased with the
effort and the commitment shown by the team last season which enabled us to gain
promotion.
“I cannot under estimate the support I have received from all at the club and special thanks
must go to Shane Jones, who has been amazing coaching the squad.”
The club are fortunate to have such an experienced management team with both Townsend
and Jones previously playing professional football with Cardiff City and Hereford United
respectively.
Club Secretary Adrian Nicholls was the evenings compere and also paid special praise to all
who have been instrumental in the successful season including the committee members,
wives, girlfriends, the staff at the Llanhilleth Hotel and the clubs sponsors Swan EMS.
Mr Nicholls explained:” It gives me great pleasure to stand here tonight and be able to look
around and see so many members of both the Gwent County and North Gwent squads
who came through the JFR Llanhilleth junior team ranks.
“20 years ago Norman Dennes set up JFR Llanhilleth for under-11’s in the area, this evolved
over the years and there is now an under 18 team in the village.
“Last season the first team played a fixture and I looked around the dressing room, out of
the 14 players present, ten had come through the JFR ranks, so we as a club must thank
Norman for his vision and securing the future of the club through these players.”
The club has already started pre-season training in preparation for their forthcoming
adventure in the Gwent County League One on Monday and Wednesday evenings over the
watchful eyes of Townsend and Jones and are looking to add to both the Gwent County and
North Gwent squads, with new and old players welcome.
One player in particular, Johnny Dalton will be looking to add to his record appearance tally
of playing 421 (60 substitute) games for the club at all levels, scoring more than 121
goals in the process.
