An event to promote girls rugby, run by PROPER RUGBY people, attended by PROPER RUGBY people
What an amazing weekend!
An idea to take the girls teams away for a weekend had been bouncing around fir some time but it was an almost last minute decision to go. What a great decision that was! However Friday evening, it wasn't looking that way.
As I drove the stand in rust bucket into the car park furrows in the girls brows were clear to be seen. Complaints rang out as we squashed them in and threw their kit in on top of them ...... the only way to get it all in. By the time Telford loomed in front of us, the sat nav had given up the ghost and it's then we found out we left the road map at home as well. Onward we ploughed. Sandra Price ready reckoning getting us to within a mile of the camp site before we had to ask for directions!
The light was fading so the first challenge was to get the tents up in the dark. "Mark, where's the pegs" a concerned Alex questioned. Nicely cleaned and counted in a separate plastic bag lying on my hallway floor. Getting better with every passing moment. A resourceful Abi however had the tent standing in no time.
4:30am a tremendous roar above the tents, so we're camped a couple of mile from the end of the East Midlands airport. realising how cold it was at that time in the morning, quick to the showers to warm up, no hot water! By now the rack and quartering machine was being pulled into position adjoining the gallows that were built the night before, my name audibly heard as the first person to test it.
Time for rugby and a little sun popped it's head out between the clouds. The banshee wolf team was drawn for the 2nd, 4th and 6th games. First up a rather large powerful Minehead side overcame a Walcot team in a game of very high class rugby. What had we let our selves in for?
A challenge and one our girls stood up to. An enthralling game of rugby powerful defence led by Ffion and Sarah, gave us great go forward ball Page, Elin and Meg x2 tries gave us a good win. But it wasn't just the rugby that stood out in this match, After receiving a hard head high tackle from an overexurberant player, the 2nd half saw Ffion helping to carry that player to her sideline for attention. That level of sportsmanship was there from the squad all festival.
Minehead were next, another I unwavering toe to toe clash saw the honours shared. This time Chloe's Barry John step and acceleration saw her score from her 10m line joining Meg x2 for a 3 v 3 draw. Bad news high the camp Angel couldn't continue, swelling around her little finger was clearly a problem and later on it turned out to be fractured.
Walcot were the last group game, and although not winners in their previous game had a couple of outstanding rugby players that needed to be contained. Again Meg picked up two tries, and gave a sublime pass to put Ffion in for her first. This was added to by the usual forceful run of Sarah Price taking no prisoners.
Party, Party Party on Saturday night, confidence couldn't have been higher. A great night ensued. Following morning, the girls were up firing on all cylinders awaiting semi finals. Losing Elin to watch her sister play in the U18 East Wales v West Wales and Angel's injury left us with 6 standing players. A quick request at coaches mtg and inundated with offers, great rugby people here.
Semi final v Buckingham Cygnets, what's in store, from kick off looks like anther bruising encounter. So it proved game abandon after it went down to 4aside. Nothing malicious in the game, but it was full on, on hard ground, couple of missed timed / clumsy challenges saw the tackler being hurt. Credit to all players involved 100% effort. we'd edged it with Sarah and Paige joining another impressive brace by Megan.
Final here we come! And what a game, standard of rugby suited the occassion, hard running on good lines. Megan released Paige in space, on the wing and half a field later she put the ball down. Spectators from both sides on the edge of their seats. Nia broke the gain line gaining meters with powerful hand offs, across the half way, tackle made, great clear out Ffion and Paige, Sarah picks and drives, no defenders at the edge of the tackle she's off... score. Meg catches from kick off with 10m to make before the first attempted tackle, to powerful 3/4field run and she's in. Seconds left 3 all. Old Richians have the ball, defence concentration as keen as mustard, collision, the balls is free Paige has her hands on it, side step, she's through, sprints away....score, final whistle. the cup is ours....and BC's........ and Wellington's.
An amazing weekend, quality hosts, quality event, quality venue, quality opposition, brought our girls together, brought the best out of them........the best rugby they have achieved all season; and the manner in which they played it.... amazing.
Winner though......everyone there! and Girls rugby!
The icing to finish my favorite Season!
