U18 @ Melbourne Minxes 7s
A great weekend at a great event, #girlsplayrugbytoo
Travelling with 3 players to a 7's event, in hopefulness really. Coincidence that the Banshee's were there with 4 players with the same mindset!
A long wait in a keen wind, and a draw that started our campaign against the eventual festival winners. Wellington Girls RUFC. What an outfit they were, fast, powerful, skilful, keen as mustard. From kick off, baptism by fire, they had scored. Slowly we got together won some ball and attacked. But space was limited against a very sound aggressive defence. Banshee Pip Lantos got a consolation score from a run starting at her 22m; which was well received.
Second game up v hosts Melbourne Minxes, fairing better in this started playing some rugby, but a try scoring powerful surge by Banshee Ellie Wilson saw her pick up a knee injury putting paid to her weekend's play. Game abandoned, 3rd game up getting late and very cold, handshake for a draw. start again tomorrow with a clear head....... clear head?????? its Saturday night on tour .....its party time!
Banshee and wolves ..... rightly named? party ANIMALS
Afternoon kick off programmed, hunt around the camp looking for willing volunteers to make up the numbers, same as the u15 offers from every team, just wanting to get girls onto the pitch in competitive rugby.
Drawn v Old Richians from Gloucester in the semi final. Chalk and cheese in 24hrs.
What a start, gone for broke, hell for leather, kick and chase and flatten the catcher. An intense open game of end to end rugby. This was more like it, Richians just a yard or two slower than Wellington in their line speed and it was all Chloe Meyrick and Pip Lantos needed to work their magic. A superb understanding between these two was evident. CJ (Wellington volunteers) Alex and Evie worked hard up front to supply ball and Esme and Abi benefitted with space out wide. Pip and Chloe scored a brace, whilst Abi and another Wellington volunteer scored the others. 6 tries maybe but they wouldn't have been enough without the tackling, and scramble defence, this was end to end rugby a cracking game to watch.
The cup final beckoned v Wellington........
A couple of Minxes were keen to volunteer. It might be said that the majority of the rugby was played in our half but it was both sides playing it, not content to just boot and chase; or just contain; the girls played some great rugby, but the iron curtain defence of Wellington was just impenetrable. Strong over the ball and a powerful scrummage gave Wellington enough ball to score 7 tries. Mistake by Wellington, the balls loose, Chloe reacts first and pounces for our consolation try, cheered by all. The girls played to the end, with great passion, skill, and commitment. Credit due to Wellington; festival champions for the simple reason they were the best there from day one through to the final,
Winners of the weekend...... everyone there and girls rugby!
