Youth Pre Season update

After an encouraging period of preseason training the Youth continued their preparation for the new season by playing two friendlies in the past week
Last Saturday Blackwood who play in the Dragons A division were the visitors to Rhydypennau Park. During the match played over three periods Llanishen were able to give valuable game time to 24 players including 12 of last years under 16 squad.
After a scoreless first period the young lions played some excellent rugby in the second to take a 14-0 lead with try’s by Sam Jones – Williams and Kieran Toynton who converted both. However in the final minute of the period Blackwood used their massive pack to drive over the line to make the score to 14-5.
Early in the third period Blackwood scored again when their pack once again drove over in the corner after a five metre line out. A superb touchline conversion made the score 14-12 a lead which Llanishen held until the last minute when they were unfortunate to concede a penalty for an alleged high tackle. Blackwood gratefully accepted the three points to take the game 15-14
Despite the score line the coaches were more than happy with the overall performance and commitment especially at the breakdown from the squad against a physically bigger team.
On Wednesday evening a squad of 22 players made the trip up the Rhondda Valley to Tylorstown returning home with a comfortable 17-0 victory.
Llanishen scored a try in each of the three periods through Lewis Marshall, Gareth Vaterlaws and Liam Greenslade with one conversion from Kieran Toynton
Apart from a five minute spell at the start of the second period Llanishen controlled the game. During this period they showed excellent defense to hold out their opponents.
The coaching team was delighted with the performances in both games which confirmed that the squad has strength in depth with real competition for places. As they build towards the season which starts on 1 September with a home Cardiff and District Cup game against Llandaff North it was pleasing to see some of the things that they worked on in the summer being used in the games.
