1-1 draw after an Arctic battle in the depths of Woking
Match Report from DoD MC Muz
On a day when the beast from the east came back for more, we waited in suspense for Capt MJ to confirm if the battlefield would be fit for war or if it had been defeated by the brutal Syrian air…..we waited a little more…and more…..and then, BANG, THE GAME WAS ON.
After a beautiful journey to the pitch through a Narnia-esq Surrey countryside, we made it to Woking HC (with GK Phil only just in tact having confused a nearby tree for Mr Tumnus’ home).
After a short warm up to help sweat off some over-indulgence from the night before (cough*Sabina*cough*Tibbs*cough*Beth), the game began in freezing, snowy conditions – even the oppo were impressed that some of our legs were still on show (including Yas’ dodgy under shorts).
Ed’s started well and applied the pressure from early on, with the ever-solid backline preventing any threats from Woking, including some impressive diving interceptions from Kelly.
The pressure continued and Ed’s earned a short corner from a classy upgrade by Serena. It was time for Susie THE GREAT to step up and deliver a Scottish slammer from the top of the D, almost shattering the back board into pieces (FREEEEEEEDOM).
Ed’s continued to threaten, with Sasmina coming close in her attempt to regain her Top Scorer spot and staying on her feet after a conspicuous tackle from the oppos goalie. Woking started to gain momentum and after a couple of slick 1-2’s down the right hand side, followed by a bit of a scrap in the D, they converted what we all thought would be the equaliser…but it was not too be, all credit to the honesty and sportsmanship of Woking who held their hands up and admitted to a foot before the ball crossed the line.
This didn’t seem to stop Woking, however, and the equaliser did come early in the second half after a quiet start from Ed’s post half time. This reignited Ed’s though and our game faces were back on. Nozza, whose forearms seem to be growing larger by the day (we can only imagine what(o) is causing that!) took no prisoners and with her solid defence and some delightful distribution and visibility from Edgy Em, we took control of the game.
With some relentless work and grit from the mids and forwards, we managed to secure several short corners, but struggled to convert, until Susie THE GREAT stepped up to deliver another slammer that bounced off the keepers pads and was then pushed and deflected into the goal for what we thought to be Ed’s second goal……..but it was not to be ☹…..DISALLOWED…..let’s not get into why.
Ed’s continued to apply the pressure, with some great running and passionate play from the whole team, coming close to the winning goal on several occasions, but Woking continued to put up the barriers.
The battle ended 1-1, and I think it’s safe to say that luck was not on our side and we deserved more from a game in tough conditions…but onwards and upwards….time to prep our strawpedo’s and lambrini’s for the final game of the season!
Shout out to our favourite daffodil Beth who played her last game as she leaves us for sunny Amsterdam in a couple of months (send us back some brownies?!)
- MOM went to Nozza for some flair defending and D worldies!
- DOD to me (unfairly) for losing Kelly’s gumshield case – shout out also for Serena’s post match hiccup – leaving her skort behind.
Over and out LADS xx
