What a difference a week makes!
Bucks go off to play into the lions den with just 14 players
Morale was high for the Bucks this week with the expectation of a full team and even a reserve! Unfortunately one didn't show and another was needed to bolster the 1sts bench but the remaining 14 were up to the challenge.
Casual 2nds were a big, physical pack with a full bench. From the first whistle Casual's dominance in the game was apparent and without a kicker for Bucks it would be difficult for them to alleviate pressure on their try line. The first 10 mins saw Casuals turn the advantage of the extra man into 2 tries. But as Bucks started to get hold of the ball and put some good interplay together this led to two tries scored by Scott Bayes and Adam Foster plus a conversion by Nick Twigg. However Casuals managed to regain their dominance to score their 4th try on 28 minutes. There followed some good defensive work by Bucks as the scratch team started to gel together, which culminated in the 10 minutes before half time Casuals receiving 2 yellow cards for separate incidents and unfortunately another try.
The second half saw Bucks come out and put pressure on Casuals and it looked as if Bucks would score however a turn over by Casuals in their 22 saw them exploit the extra man advantage to score their 6th try of the afternoon. In the 7th minute Casuals received their 3rd yellow of the day. With the numbers now even Scott Bayes was able to go over for his 2nd try on the 9th minute. Unfortunately the 10th minute saw Fred Saunders leave the field of play with an AC joint injury. Casuals lent Bucks a player so they didn't have to drop further to 13 but he couldn't match the strength of play that Fred was bringing to the game. Casuals were the next to score on 18 minutes, but Bucks came up with a try by Dave Roberts. At this stage a number of players were feeling the worse for wear and Callum Evans, Man of the Match last week, was feeling the pressure more than most. Scott Bayes stepped up to relieve Callum in the front row of the scrum. Casuals began better exploiting their extra man by quickly moving the ball out wide which gave them two tries in rapid succession. Callum came off on 35 minutes. Nick Twigg managed to intercept a pass and ran in a try which was converted by Dave Roberts. In the dying seconds of the game Bucks put one last effort in which saw Scott Bayes being stopped millimeters short of the line.
Every single player put their body on the line, but ultimately man of the match was awarded to Jamie Clarke who led from the front with fabulous interlink play both in attack and support helping Bucks mask their lower numbers. If 14 can perform like this, just imagine what it would be like with a full team and bench. Come on lads get in the mix!!
Despite being unable to play, Will Howells and Ross McPhillips came and supported the team.
