Bucks do battle for maximum points again!
The Bucks traveled to their second league match of the season, hoping to match the performance they put together against Heathens in round 1.
Supported by Ricky, fresh from his success at the Great North Run, the Bucks were keen to get going.
The teams were evenly matched in the first quarter of the game, with Alex Valentine slotting a penalty, however Bucks were growing in confidence as their scrummaging seemed to get stronger and stronger. Bucks were awarded a penalty just inside Brackley's half and Alex Valentine put a beautiful touch finder in to give Bucks a line-out 15 metres from Brackley's line. Bucks caught the ball cleanly and drove towards the line. Then, 5 meters from the line, the back row peeled off the maul to the blind side for Craig Eales to score the first try of the
game. Shortly after, saw Alex Valentine turn on the afterburners to score and convert the second try of the match.
At half time the Bucks were 15 - 0 up, but Brackley were a long way from being finished.
Eight minutes into the second half Ben Walton, returning from a long lay off, came up with the first try of the second half, with 'metronome' Alex Valentine converting the try. No more than 4 minutes later Alex Valentine came up with his 2nd try, and the 4th of the match, after an explosive break by jake toseland led to him passing the ball to Alex Valentine to score and convert the try. The game started to get untidy and the Bucks saw themselves being walked backwards by the referee after silly infringements around the ruck area. However Brackley kicked the ball to the Bucks which was picked up by Jacob Draper, he ran the ball back and then followed a passage of play which ended up with Alex Valentine reversing a pass (thereby avoiding paying for a round of drinks for the team!) to Sam Dudgeon to score the 5th try of the Match, converted by Alex Valentine. The Referee still was penalizing Bucks and walking them backwards. Finally he lost his patience and showed captain Andrew Tarplee the yellow card for repeat transgressions whatever they were. Bucks by this stage though were in control and continued to put up a sterling defense for the last 5 minutes thus preventing Brackley from getting any points on the board.
Overall the game was rather staccato with patches of brilliance. There's more to do but this is a promising start to the season with more players returning from injury over the next few weeks. Great to see so much support at a 2nd's away game - the more in the mix the merrier!
