Long Eaton Rugby Leads the Way in Coach Development with New Appointment

4 months ago By Chris Brookes

LERFC has further strengthened its coaching capability with the appointment of a dedicated Coach Development and School Liaison Officer.

Long Eaton Rugby Club has further strengthened its coaching capability with the appointment of a dedicated Coach Development and School Liaison Officer.

The club has brought Jon Welham on board to assist its coaches' continual development, deliver the most up-to-date internal training and help the club maintain its high standards for providing the best possible experience for its members.

Jon has a wealth of experience in the coaching field, having previously worked with Derby Rugby Club for 25 years as a player and Chair of the minis and junior section. Now employed as a professional coach and mentor in the education system, Jon is fully qualified as a trainer and delivers training courses in most aspects of Rugby Union. In this pioneering move by Long Eaton, the club will be one of the only clubs at its level in the region to have this amount of developmental expertise within its team to be solely responsible for the club and community.

Alongside his assistance with Long Eaton's coaches, Jon will liaise with schools in the area to help strengthen community bonds and promote rugby to youngsters. Through his knowledge of the RFU's popular All Schools programme, Jon will help drive new members to the club through organised events and festivals and be the point of contact for the club's partner schools in the area, creating a clear pathway from school to club rugby.

Jon said: "I am thrilled to take the role of Coach Development and School Liaison officer at Long Eaton Rugby. The club has achieved so much over the past couple of years and is leading the way with its professional approach and community spirit. To be a part of that is a dream job for me.

"The coaching in place at Long Eaton is top class and the relationships with local schools are strong, but with some further guidance and a strategic development programme in place, I think we can take the club to that next level. I'm excited to get started."

Chris Brookes, Chairman at Long Eaton Rugby, said: "This is a bold move from a club at our level, but we're delighted to have Jon on board. We strongly believe his presence will make a huge difference at our club, not only at a mini and junior level, but with the whole coaching team right up to the seniors.

"One of Jon's core values is constant learning and evolution, which fits with our ambitions as a club to provide the very best and most up-to-date coaching for our players of all ages. We have full trust that with his extensive experience and knowledge, we are capable of achieving one of the best coaching set ups in the Midlands."

Paul Gardener, Vice Chairman and Coach at Long Eaton Rugby, said; "It's great news that Jon will be joining us, he will be a valuable addition to the coaching team and we all look forward to working with him."
