Long Eaton United came back from a goal down to win against promotion candidates Bestwood Park Rangers this morning, a win that takes the team 6 points clear of Wollaton and firmly places the team in a comfortable mid table position.
The game plan was clearly set out to the team before kick off, they needed to be strong for the first half and hope that this would cause the opposition to lose confidence. For the first 18 minutes the home side were on top but the oppositions keeper, the best I have seen at this level stopped everything that came at him. United could have been 2 or 3 up inside the first 10 minutes but the pressure wasn't converted.
Towards the end of the first half a mistake by the Blues let in a Bestwood player who fired in an unstoppable effort from inside the box and Bestwood lead 1-0. Shouting from the sidelines I told the players that they were more than in the game, not to let their heads drop which would inevitably cause us further problems.
The first half came to an end with the visitors holding a narrow lead, we could come back, I knew it.
United came back out for the 2nd half unchanged, I just felt that the first 5 minutes could be very important so I didn't want to alter the lineup. Luckily, for me, it worked. A long ball by Brandon caught Calum S on the left, he controlled it perfectly and broke into space. A inch perfect pass into the box to Josh and the midfielder made no mistake burying it past the keeper. United were back in the game and the momentum was turning in our favour.
The game began to get a little scrappy for the next 8-9 minutes with little niggling fouls being conceded by both sides. To be honest though, I wasn't worried as this was playing into our favour, I knew they had quality players but if we could frustrate them we could go on to win it.
Adam came on for Calum up front with the instructions to cause the back two problems on and off the ball, to keep them on their toes and to pull them out of position as much as possible. With 8 minutes to go a through ball from half way found Austin clear on the left, Adam had pulled both the defenders out of position! He brought the ball under control fantastically and ran through into the box. The keeper began to come out but Austin stayed calm and gave the keeper no chance with a well placed finish.
It really was a perfect time to score, leaving the visitors little chance to recover. They did however get on top for the last 5 minutes but Elliot got to everything they fired in, even saving a pin point shot with his face at one point.
Full time, we had won 2-1. I result I couldn't dream of. I really felt so proud to see the lads beaming with smiles. After 3 years of work we have made it, we can now compete with the better sides and I having a feeling we are going to do very well next season.
School holidays approach so the Blues do not play until Saturday 14th April now, but now the clocks go forward we can once again return to training on the green stuff, where football should be played!
