Garry Birtles brought the house down with his tales from football in the 1970s and 80s

The clubhouse was packed for the return of Long Eaton United’s most famous son last night.

Garry Birtles, a former floor layer from a Chilwell council estate, was famously plucked from the ranks of United by Brian Clough and would go on to represent Forest, Manchester United and England as he achieved Europe’s highest domestic trophy – twice in succession.

Fans were stunned into silence – with the occasion roar of laughter – as Birtles reminisced on a career that began with Clifton All Whites as a young lad and finished at Gresley Rovers in a managerial capacity after retiring.

From the boozy exploits of the 70s and 80s to playing Connect Four after victory in Europe and the low of signing on to the doll after retirement it was a night of revelations as the decorated player returned home.

Thanks to the Chandelier restaurant, in Derby Road, for the catering and for fans for an all round superb evening.

Excerpts of An Evening With Garry Birtles to follow.
