Longlevens Under 10s pipped in Droitwich final

Longlevens Under 10s made the trip up the M5 on Sunday morning for the Droitwich tournament held at the impressive Droitwich rugby club

Longlevens 25 Worcester 0
In the first game of the day Ethan Hunt scored the first try after some confusion about the location of the try line had prevented a certain score for Finley Clift. George Barton added the second and Clift a third following a great sidestep in a jinking run. Longlevens kept the pressure on, making great gains in particular from the sound lineout work of Hunt and Myles Wilson. Jake Connors scored the fourth try following a typical piece of scavenging of the loose ball, and scrum half Henry Garner registered the final score after good work from Barton and Connors

Levens started off this game slowly, and would have conceded first but for a try-saving tackle from Robert Moffat. As they started to get into their stride though the tries started flowing, and there were scores from Clift, Wilson (after a fine tackle from Bradley Wilkins) and Hunt. The second half started with two quick tries from George Barton, and then Clift put in Connor McCarthy to weave through and touch down in the corner. Frank Aldous then capitalised on good tackling from Clift to add the seventh try of the game, and Myles Wilson broke through a number of tackles to put in McCarthy on the line for his second.

Longlevens 25 Luctonians Knights 0
Luctonians were unable to cope with the ferocious tackling of the Longlevens side that ran out comfortable winners again in their final group game. Barton and Wilson scored the first two tries. Superiority in both scrum and lineout were creating opportunities, as evidenced by the third try when Myles Wilson caught and ran through the defence. Finley Clift scored the fourth following good pressure from Brad Wilkins and Ethan Hunt, who caught in the lineout once again and drove through for the fifth.

Semi Final: Longlevens 15 Luctonians Foxes 5
The semi-final matched Longlevens against the other side from a Luctonians club still smarting from the earlier defeat in the pool stage. Hunt and Barton added to their tallies to make it two tries to nil at half time, and Jake Connors scored again in the second half following a good drive from the Longlevens team, with Barton at its heart. The Foxes grabbed a late consolation try with a score in the corner.

Final: Longlevens 10 Droitwich 15
Up against a strong team from the host club, Longlevens first sneaked ahead in this close contest through a try from Ethan Hunt, but were pegged back to one apiece by the break. Droitwich went ahead in the second half, and as the time ticked away, there was one final desperate break from George Barton, dummying when everyone had expected the ball to be moved out through the backs, and scything through the defence to score. However, Droitwich then hit back deep into injury time added by the referee from Luctonians, with what sure enough proved to be the decisive score.
A fine effort from the Longlevens team as usual, culminating with the unfamiliar feeling of defeat, but all three teams from the club (U10s, U11s and U12s) made it to the final of their respective competitions.
