Boro came up against last season’s county champions and suffered a heavy defeat. Whilst not playing badly Boro were facing opponents that were quicker in thought and deed and those small margins made a big difference on the day. Boro were slightly weakened by injuries and cry offs but that would probably have only reduced the margin of the host’s victory, it certainly would not have reversed it.

Boro kicked off but soon lost the ball and scrambling near their own line saw the ball intercepted by a Lutterworth forward to open the scoring, although the conversion was missed. Lutterworth were soon presssing for the line again and stout defence from both Rob Ashmore and Fraser Beresford kept them out. Liam Barney replaced the injured Oliver Page and it was then the turn of Billy Fieldhouse to make a try saving tackle on the line. All this was very much backs to the wall from Boro as Lutterworth continued to sweep forward and forced them elves over from close range for their second try. Boro heads dropped a little and from a short penalty move the forwards all left the tackling to one another when if two or three had stepped in a try would have been averted. A further Boro injury introduced Paddy Cross to the game for his debut , and Lutterworth continued on the front foot. Boro continued to have problems securing clean ball form the line out and following a fumble close to the line the hosts scored their fourth try just before half time, to lead 24-0 at the break.

Boro’s hopes were raised early in the second half as Charlie Livesey gathered the ball from the kick off and evading all the defenders as he ran through for a fine solo try, converted by Elliot Sampson. Boro maintained some parity early in the second half as their hosts only scored one early unconverted try. However, despite some brave defending from Boro Lutterworth finally wore them down and proved simply too strong, and ran in four further second half tries to run out 53-7 winners.

A tough Sunday for the U13s, with Lutterworth clearly showing why they are county champions. The U13s now know the level to which they need to aspire. A little more leadership from the more experienced players on the field and some more game time for the new players should help. The coaches will be looking for this during the course of the three upcoming home games
