Boro find it easy going against a Melton Forest East scratch team
Loughborough U13s home v Melton Forest East September 25th
Boro U13s played a scratch team of players made up from Melton and Leicester Forest East on Sunday at Derby Road in their first home fixture of the season. Boro had all but one member of their 24 man squad available for selection and all of them were going to get game time as the coaches decided to play 3 fifteen minute periods.
Boro proved far too strong for the scratch side running in 12 tries and converting 4 of them to run out 68-0 winners. After last week’s loss it proved to be a confidence boosting outing for the home team. They were dominant all over the field, in the set piece Jacob Abraham took 2 heels against the head at scrum time, and the forwards won all 3 line outs on the opposition throw. The ball was kept alive by both forwards and backs, and the opposition made to scramble across the field in defence as the point of attack was constantly varied. The backs scored the bulk of the tires but the forwards set the platform from which they were able to exploit the space out wide. The forwards were quicker to the ball than the opposition, and more organised, rucking and mauling strongly with Nikolai Irmanov making some strong runs in a man of the match performance and Charlie Sankey popping up all over the place with the ball in hand. When personnel were swapped out at the end of each period there was no let-up in the pressure, 5 tries being scored in both the first and third periods of play.
Tries were run in from short and long range, with Ben Holloway scoring five, including two which started inside his own half. Others were scored by Charlie Livesey, Ben Urwin, Billy Fieldhouse, Rob Mead, Rob Ashmore, Marcus Shaw and the forwards were represented by Ollie Page, who touched down after the forwards had kept the ball alive through several phases whilst moving downfield.
All in all a good day for the U13s, they were not severely tested, but played the opposition in front of them and executed their game plan well, ready for sterner tests in the coming weeks.
