Market Harborough/Loughborough RFC U18 Women's vs Boudicas

Market Harborough-Loughborough v Boudicas

On a cold Sunday afternoon the Market Harborough-Loughborough cluster faced Boudicas, a Diss-Woodbridge-Beccles cluster from Norfolk/Suffolk.

MH-L kicked off and after 2 breakdowns turned the ball over and Leah Bartlett picked up 20 metres out and glided past the defence to open MH-L's account in less than a minute. Five minutes later MH-L doubled their score with the try of the day, if not the season. Bartlett received the ball on the half way line and started running directly with Tab Copson in support. The ball changed hand seven times between the two players, who never moved more than 3 metres apart, as they went deep into the 22 before Copson eased past the final defender to touch down.

Despite enthusiastic tackling by Boudicas, MH-L kept the pressure on and after good forward play the ball came to Emily Wetherill whose strong run broke the defence and a sympathetic offload gave Gina Watson a comfortable 20 metre run in.

MH-L may have eased up or Boudicas upped their work rate but MH-L were next put under pressure and had to do some serious defending. However a strong run by Boudicas, picking up from the back of a scrum inside the 22, led to their first score and the end of Wetherill's game with an ankle injury. The conversion made the score 15-7. After few minutes of play when the two teams equalled each others play, MH-L pulled further ahead with Watson's second try, when she used her strength to get over the line. Scrum half Amy Relf, a change of kicker, added the two extra points. The half was coming to its close but still had time for Ellie Turner to add MH-Ls fifth try with a mazy run from outside the 22, again converted by Relf. Then Boudicas broke up the right wing and a short pass allowed their player to burst between 3 MH-L players to add their second score, to complete the half at 29-12.

The second half started off more even with MH-L slightly on top but not dominating in the same way as the first half. It took nearly the whole of the third quarter before MH-L were awarded a lineout 15 metres out from the Boudicas line. A training ground move saw the ball thrown short to Bartlett who powered through three defenders to reach the line. Shortly afterwards, from a ruck on halfway, Relf picked up the ball and with a typical scrum half's sniping run outpaced the opposition to touch down under the posts. She duly converted her own try to take MH-Ls tally to over 40 points. Boudicas then had another purple patch where they pressurised the MH-L defence and if not for some heroic tackling, by Relf especially, would have scored again. With the game moving into the last few minutes and Boudicas attacking, a long kick by Bartlett saw the Boudicas defence fumble the ball allowing Copson to disrupt the attempted pass and with the ball loose Bartlett picked up to get her third try. Relf converted again. After another stoppage for injury Boudicas restarted the game. The ball was caught by Watson who was tackled just short of the halfway line. The forwards cleared out the ruck and prop Hannah Walton popped a short pass to Bartlett at full speed. She burst passed the tiring Boudicas defence and despite being chased back reached the line for her 4th try.

To their great credit Boudicas didn't give up and with almost the last play of the game forced their way deep into the MH-L 22 and despite several tackles to stop them, finally forced over to score their third try. With the conversion hitting the bar the scoring was completed leaving MH-L winners by 53 points to 17.

Rose Smith, Alice Liles, Lucy Gardner and Anna Kitching played powerfully in the forwards and mention must go too to Izzy Drezler, Jasmine Eames and Meg Holland in the backs plus congratulations to Fatima Choudhury, playing her first game at wing for the club.

Congratulations to both teams for providing a terrific game of rugby.
