Loughborough 4s put out a decent squad in their last friendly before their 2nd league game vs Burbage next week and came up against a big Ilkeston side who weren't afraid to throw the ball wide and play the game at pace.
Up hill and into the wind, Borough made a decent start to the game with 2 tries, including a Timmy Campbell
special as he took a beatifully weighted pass to take on 2 players and score, but a lack of discipline setting the defensive line allowed Ilkeston to stay in the game and 2 tries and conversions a-piece meant that both sides were neck and neck at half time. First-up tackling was excellent and Loughborough managed to weather a 15-20 minute period without the ball, time and again thwarting the opposition and contesting and disrupting at both scrums and lineouts to work territory. With the wind in their favour and fresh faces to come on, the 2nd half held promise.
Half time saw everything come together, and with the opposition Number 8 in the sin-bin for dangerous play, the scrum took their opportunities to make the weight difference in the pack count. The pressure counted and, with depth in the backline and strong individual performances from Adam Lee
on the wing, Andy Jones
and Rowan Thornton who made scrummaging tough for the opposition front row, Borough ran in 6 second-half tries without conceding; a most pleasing statistic in what was a tough game. Given the foundations by the forwards, the backs again looked dangerous, Chris Glover
using his pace(!) and experience in the centre to deliver the right pass at the right time.
Well done to the lads who made their first starts of the year (and those who made their first starts for a few years!). Thanks to the referee, who enjoyed a good game with the whistle, thanks to Ilkeston for coming over and giving us a really hard game, and fingers crossed for a bit of rain to soften the pitches up.
Make sure we use the better parts of our performance in the next league game, another tough fixture away at Burbage (details to follow).
Tries: Timmy Campbell
4, Max 2, A Lee 1, A Jones 1, D Rees 6 conversions.
