History - History 1
Welsh rugby began as a result of the efforts of returning university men who brought back from England a game that was suited to the sociological structure of South Wales and close to the emotional passion of its in-habitants. These men, like sons of Iron Masters, the clergy and the like soon infused a reverence for the game which has characterised the spirit of the nation. It would be unwise to assume that Loughor rugby did have its roots in the same tradition.
One knows that Neath was the first major club formed in Wales in 1871, yet there is evidence that Blaenau Gwent had already been established in 1869. The spread of the game across the coalfield reached Loughor in 1882.
The early days as with most clubs, centered around its industry and thus it was the Island Field, down near Loughor Estuary and the Broadoak colliery, that saw the first organised rugby in Loughor.
To what extent this rugby was organised one can, however, only surmise. Yet Loughor was soon to divide into two distinct clubs. Bwlch-y-mynydd continued to exist down on the river bank, yet the strains of the rugby creed were soon to be heard in the upper part of the village.
