Billericay 27 - 37 L&Y
Another win for the boys in Blue & White
Lowestoft & Yarmouth made the journey down into the south of Essex for a game with bottom of the table Billericay. L&Y arrived feeling confident of the win as their opponent hadn’t won a game this season. From the onset Billericay were on the attack and pushing up onto oppositions half forcing a penalty after 4minutes 30m out and opt to kick for points. And a few minutes later they were awarded another penalty but missed the kick.
L&Y kept pushing back with great runs from Unathi Kongwana
and Stu Moore. A chip through from Unathi chased down field but unfortunately went dead. Billericay from the drop out worked it well and went the length of the pitch finally getting it out on the wing using the slope to his advantage and scoring in the corner; successfully converted putting the home side 10-0 up 12 minutes into the first half.
Billericay again were up on the attack through their fly half and passing out to their flanker who knocks it on, allowing the play to continue L&Y managed to turn it over. Immediately counter attacking with the South African’s teaming up to allow Zingisa April
to brush off the defence to score under the posts and Unathi to kick the conversion.
Billericay continued to put pressure on L&Y and getting under the skin as they were awarded a penalty in front of the sticks after the ball was kicked away after play had stopped; the home side opted for a scrum and kept the pressure on to have L&Y pinged again for hands in the ruck on the 22. Kick was just left on the posts and slotted over easily on Billericay. First half subs Leon Culley
off for Luc Breij
. Then later Leon starts the second half for Carl Stephenson
. L&Y went in behind 13 – 7.
After what must have been a good half time talk, L&Y came straight out of the blocks from the start of the second half with Stephen Gaines scoring in the corner after only a few minutes. Set up perfectly by a good line out looped and recycled well. April runs another in under the posts shortly after from a turn over won by the forwards. Both conversions missed.
Billericay came back to score from work their half backs and then again after 15 further minutes of play alternating between the two sides this time by their centre touching down on the left of the posts; both conversions cleared.
After that L&Y seemed to step it up a gear to score 4 tries in the final 10 minutes of play; all unconverted. First try arose after a solid scrum with a pick and go allowing Kongwana to score under the posts. Aprils then added to his try tally with one in the far left corner after a mistake from the Billericay forwards.
To round the game up the Captain Matthew Howell booted out of their own 22 which resulted in a drop out that was recovered by Reihana Haare allowing Tyler Beales
to sprint into the oppositions 22 where he was tackled by Billericay backs but managed to get the ball fed back to Matty Howell who had run in support to drive over the line in the corner. Only a few minutes later Howell score into the corner after a turn over from Billericay trying to play out of their defensive line with the forwards getting over the ball. Final Whistle and L&Y win! 27 - 37
Billericay made the visitors work a lot harder than they had been expecting, but Lowestoft and Yarmouth prevailed in the last moments securing a bonus point leaving them 5th in the table. A well-deserved rest week next week before we welcome Upminster (6th) to Gunton park on the 15th 2:15 KO.
