Club History

Club History Club History
Luncarty Football Club were formed in 1886, by employees of the local bleach works.

In January 1898 Luncarty became founder members of the Perthshire Senior League which also included Scone, Stanley, Huntingtower, Tulloch and Airleywright.

The Perthshire Consolation Cup was won in 1913/14 after Luncarty defeated Scone 2-1 in the final at Perth. Luncarty were runners-up in the same competition in 1919/20, the Bleachers going down 2-0 to Vale of Atholl at Pitlochry. The club also regularly competed in the Scottish Qualifying Cup but never progressed past the second round.

The clubs colours varied during this period playing in black & white (1904-10), green and white (1910-1916) and navy (1919-1922).

Junior football was booming in Perthshire in the early 1920's with Luncarty reverting to this grade of football for season 1921/22, joining the Perthshire Junior Football Association and entering the Strathmore League (alongside the likes of Stanley, Alyth Athletic & Coupar Angus Comrades).

Luncarty played at Langlands Park up until 1996, although during the Second World War, they moved to Milton Farm (the fields opposite the current ground) as their own park was ploughed up for use as a vegetable field. On 2nd January 1948 7,000 spectators watched Luncarty defeat Beith Juniors 5-2 in the 4th round of the Scottish Junior Cup at St. Johnstone's Muirton Park. In the 5th round of the Scottish Junior Cup in 1950/51 Luncarty were drawn at home to Rosyth Recreation. The tie was again switched to Muirton Park where 5,600 spectators turned out to see the Bleachers go down 1-0. Mr A. Alexander, a local cine camera expert, filmed the entire game which was later shown to the players in the Luncarty Institute Hall. A match programme also exists for this match. Incidentally, Luncarty lodged a protest against one of the Rosyth players and the match was ordered to be replayed at Lochgelly Albert's Gardiners Park. Luncarty again lost an exciting tie 4-3. Luncarty moved to their present home, Brownlands Park, during the 1996/97 season, although the Social Club has been in place since 1980. The first game was a Scottish Junior Cup tie against Sunnybank from Aberdeen, although the official ground opening didn't take place until August 1999 with St. Johnstone providing the opposition.

Over the years many of Luncarty's players have stepped up to the senior grade such as Dave "Ginger' Ewing (Manchester City), Jim Patterson (Queen of the South) and Malcolm Darling (Blackburn Rovers). Whilst these players, and many more, established themselves as household names in senior football, an honour was bestowed upon one of the past Presidents, George Miller, when he was appointed President of the Scottish Junior Football Association for three years (1958-61). This honour was richly deserved as George spent more than thirty years with the club.

Whilst literally thousands of players have turned out for us, we had the unique experience in season 1946/47 when four sets of brothers turned out - Davie & Fred Gardiner; Jim & Laurie Patterson; Jim & Alex McGregor; and Drew & Alec Ross. As a matter of interest, the rest of the team were all inter-related! Over the years a number of players have gained junior international honours for Scotland. Luncarty trainer Peter Gavigan (who played for St. Johnstone and Fulham amongst others) also carried out these duties for the Scottish Junior FA. A number of Luncarty players have also represented Perthshire, Midlands and Tayside Junior Selects.

As our records of the past history are rather scarce, we can only apologise if some facts have been excluded.
