Lurgan United 3 - 1 Rectory Rangers

Relief all round as a resurgent United finally delivers the win...

Date: Saturday 3rd December 2011

Lurgan United hosted Rectory Rangers on Saturday and came away with a well deserved 3-1 victory.

The match was played in very cold and windy conditions with both teams putting in committed performances.

United could have went behind in the first minute when Shane Bell inadvertently headed the ball towards his own goal only for Paul Beattie to make a cracking one handed save.

United then took control of the game with debutant Emmett O'Neill controlling the midfield and had two goals disallowed before Liam Coleman released Sean Devlin who coolly lobbed the ball over the Rectory Rangers goalkeeper.

United continued to dominate and got their rewards when the Rectory goalkeeper bundled the ball into his net under pressure from Micky Hogg from a Micky Lappin corner. The Lurgan Reds went in 2-0 up at the break.

Rectory started brightly in the second half and Beattie again saved well from a close range header.

Five minutes into the second half the visitors were then awarded a dubious penalty which was slotted home to make it 2-1.

Rectory had a lot of possession for the next ten minutes but the defence marshalled by another debutant, Eoin Fleming, held out well.

The points were finally sealed when Sean Devlin received a short free kick and his cross-come-shot looped over the Rectory 'keeper and into the net.

It was Devlin's sixth goal in his last three games and capped of an impressive performance.

Best on the day for United were Fleming, Hogg, O'Neill, Lappin and Devlin.

Team: Paul Beattie, Liam Coleman, Liam Elmore, Eoin Fleming, Micky Hogg, Shane Bell, Emmett O'Neill, Mathew Raynor, Micky Lappin, Sean Devlin, Micky Gough.

Subs: Gareth Higgins (used), Gary Duffy (used), Marty McStay & Ryan Thompson
