Launching tonight at the club's volunteer evening is a new scheme from the YRA program.

The Volunteer of the month will showcase the stories of all the good work that goes on around the club and feature the people we all know make a big difference! Starting off the scheme is an article provided by Josh Johnson, Josh has been with the club throughout the age groups into the seniors and is now giving back to the youth sections of the club from which he came.

"I have been playing for Lutterworth RFC since I was 10 in 2004. I played throughout juniors, before making the transition to colts (where I served as captain). Since 2013 I have played in the senior section, predominantly for the club 2nd XV, for whom I played more games than any other player in my first 2 seasons of senior rugby. Currently I have played over 80 2nd XV games and 11 1st XV games.
I first cut my teeth as a coach with the then U9 age group in 2010 at the age of 16 as part of my Sports Leadership qualification, while I was completing A levels. I coached that age group until 2012 when I went to Loughborough University to study Sports Management. While there I did a great deal of coaching and volunteering, predominantly through a programme called BOOST (Building On Overlooked Sporting Talent), which our very own Geraint Davies was a founding father of. Through volunteering on this programme I was able to complete my Level 1, then later my Level 2 coaching qualifications, together with the Refereeing qualification. By now I had got a real bug for coaching and so upon graduation I began an MSc in Sports Coaching, also at Loughborough. During my time as a student I coached and refereed at a number of events for both the RFU and Leicester Tigers.
I finished my Masters in summer 2016, and so returned to Lutterworth with a far enhanced knowledge base, which I believed needed to be put to use at LRFC. I spent the pre season with the U13s age group, preparing them for the transition from mini to junior rugby. In summer 2016, I also volunteered to be the new player representative to sit on the club committee. In September I began work at Lutterworth High School, where I have eased the burden of the PE staff by assuming control of the rugby teams. In this role I have sort to forge greater club/School links, for example by where possible hosting our home games at LRFC. I am hoping that such efforts will enhance the rugby experienced by junior players at both school and club.
It was also around September that I felt I could better serve the club by moving age groups, and so switched to the U16s to assist Kev Jones in preparing the squad for Colts rugby next season. In this endeavour I feel that Kev and I have been successful, and I feel excited and immensely proud of what is to come from next season’s colts. Watch this space!
I am currently coming up the club 5 out of the 7 days a week! Coaching one night a week, training myself twice a week, coming up on a Saturday for my own match, before coming back up for the U16s match on a Sunday. That said I do not mind, and in fact consider it a privilege to be able to volunteer at such a fantastic club. Up the Lutts!" - Josh Johnson

Josh isn't the only one at the club with a great story to tell, so if you know someone who needs to be showcased or would like to tell your own story then please get in touch with Volunteer Coordinator Leon Brown and his team of Young Rugby Ambassadors Joel Woodward and Rhys Jones. We look forward to broadcasting the great work being carried out around the club in the coming month's and seeing more faces involved in volunteering too!
