Indisciplined Lymington Town paid the price their inability to close a game as Alton came from behind to snatch a valuable win at the Sports Ground on Tuesday night.
A Steve Whitcher strike on the half-hour was cancelled out in the second half by Steve Brown and Ian Dyer, who scored an excellent free-kick winner - five minutes from time - punishing some lax hosts defending.
According to manager Stuart Hussey Town deserved at least a point from the game if not more on general play alone.
"We were the victims of a sucker punch, simple as that," explained Hussey. "There was nothing in it. The first half we put in a great display and the second we didn't look the same team.
"Doing it consistently for 90 minutes is a problem. The opportunities were there and we just didn't take them.
"Their goal, although a great free-kick was a sucker punch and instead of getting something from the game, we've ended up with nothing."
It was looking very positive for Town who took the game to Alton creating several chances before taking the lead on thirty-three minutes.
A Gary Falker corner wasn't properly dealt with and Whitcher continued his rich vein of form in front of goal with a superb low shot, from the edge of the area, flatfooting Craig Atkinson on it's way into the net.
Lee Chudy squandered a great chance after that. Sam Carter marouding forward and his centre was headed wide with the goal at his mercy.
That miss proved crucial when Alton levelled, seven minutes after the re-start. Brown got goal side of Gareth Byres and latched onto Nick Sharp's pass, before scoring low under the advancing Stuart Williamson.
Despite both sides creating chances and fluffing their lines to boot, it was left for Dyer to punish Town for their defending.
Brown was adjudged to have been upended by Whitcher on the edge of the area and up stepped Dyer to confidently curl an unstoppable shot into the corner and give the men from North Hampshire all three points.
Lymington's unwillingness to obey orders came back to bite them in the bum - for the second time this season - as they racked up six yellow cards and with it huge fine from the Hampshire FA.
