Saturday morning 0915 24th November 2012, Madras blues S1 team all met at station park ready to take on what was going to be a rather fiery and aggressive Linlithgow squad.
After the last visit Linlithgow were out for blood, literally. With the KO time only moments away and a final word of encouragement from the coach, Madras were all warmed up and ready for the showdown.
Kick off and Linlithgow started strong dominating the field and putting Madras on the back foot and breaking through our still sleeping defence, when out of the blue the tables turned and it was the strength and determination from our boys that they managed to push back and show Linlithgow that we were not going to be a pushover. 10 minutes in and still no score, it was time to unleash the beast, scrum down, Nathan G picks the ball, passes immediately out to Nicholas baddeley who took a few steps then passes the ball to Declan who puts it back inside to the No 8- Campbell – the beast was out, straight through the Linlithgow defence out to the wing with support runners either side, the white line in sight and “Try”, conversion taken by the new fly half extending the lead for Madras. Re start -Linlithgow passes it to their big no 20 -Try for Linlithgow, the scene was set and it wasn’t going to be a walk in the park this weekend.
Scrum – Linlithgow put in and immediately our scrum half was on the opposition, with support from the backs madras win the ball, again this time ball straight into the oncoming hands of Declan Regan, who picked up the pace and was off 2nd try for Madras, followed by a 3rd shortly after for Campbell P. Joe M with the fire in his eyes looking like the hulk wanting to destroy everything in his path had to be controlled, after some verbal warnings from the ref regarding attitudes on the pitch, and a little bit of reassurance from the coach all seemed to settle coming up to the half time.
Half-time over and a really focussed Madras team and moments into the game when Linlithgow were off ball passed out down the line drawing in Madras who seemed to stand still in amazement at a ball being passed in front of their eyes had to step up- big shout from the sideline and it was down to Declan the Linlithgow big centre tried to jump over but Declan saw this and a quick reach for the feet saw the Linlithgow boy meet the ground face on followed by a barrage of madras players looking to steal the ball, ruck formed madras ball Nathan G out to Nick out to Ross C back inside to Campbell and the one show begins, try after try after try Campbell was off.
Another ruck and this time it was getting messy, feet and hands everywhere, Nathan P got the brunt of the onslaught and decided to stick his leg under the boot of one of the opposition forwards, tackle after tackle Declan R seemed to be everywhere on the pitch and Linlithgow didn’t know whether to run round or run through. Scrum down Madras put in, this time it was the fly half who decided to run, through the first line looking up he puts the ball into the hands of Declan who puts in the pace and is off straight down the middle out to the right and puts the ball down “Try”.
With the ball going through all the hands and being passed back and forth from Madras , we just couldn’t get through the Linlithgow defence, 6 minutes to go and it’s Linlithgow ball, their big no 20 was off again this time straight through the middle, he was off try line in sight 5 meters behind our back line it was once again time to release the beast, Campbell was off, putting on the gas he left the Madras backs stood and BOOM Spider monkey on the back of the Big no 20 3 meters from the madras line, they both rolled and Campbell was on the receiving end of a series of punches and kicks ( I Guess the Linlithgow lad didn’t like to be tackled), The referee straight in with the red card, last bit of play Linlithgow overwhelmed by the Madras fitness levels had lost the battle and were admitting defeat, a final try of the game by Campbell secured the win by a considerable lead.
All the4 boys played well and did themselves proud, they kept their emotions in line and played as a team despite some injuries and the loss of some key players due to illness everyone stepped up and us coaches respect each and everyone of you and are proud of your achievements well done as S1s our record is still 100% wins..
Final Score: Madras 26 - Linlithgow 6
Tries: Campbell Palmer 5, Declan Regan 2
Conversions: Neill Stewart, Nicholas Baddeley, Declan Regan
Man of the Match- Declan Regan
