Madras Rugby Club Annual Ball

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
Welcome to one and all to the NEW re-vamped newsletter advising you all of items of club news.
1. A massive effort in cleaning up our rugby club was taken on by all teams, coaching staff and of course parents in this mammoth effort. It has resulted in a clean and tidy environment once again.
2. Further developments to try and enhance the service at the rugby club is ongoing, with new bar equipment and a small upgrade going to be taken place. This will be undertaken by local tradesmen who wish to add there little bit to the club. I will keep you up to speed with developments. All information and regular updates will be placed on the notice board in the foyer of the rugby club.
3. We are at present having our RHINO Scrummage machine serviced courtesy of the Royal Engineers at RAF Leuchars. This is a perfect piece of equipment that will allow scrummaging techniques throughout all year groups and will be available to all.
4. With all of the equipment that is held in the container, I must emphasise that it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that it is kept tidy at all times. The club invests a lot of money into this equipment therefore we do require this respect by all teams that this is adhered to. Without training equipment it would be very difficult to operate as a club. This also goes for our kit store located beside the club. The committee are looking at alternatives in reducing the number of keyholders and at solutions for the smoother operation of kit pick ups and returns.
5. We also welcome on board our new Wholesalers Allsons. They provide us with all bottle beers, spirits and soft drinks and are just in the process of implanting a new soft drinks gun within the bar and are working extremely closely at offering deals for up and coming functions.
6. Finally, a big welcome to Mike Avis who has taken over coaching duties for the 1st XV plus supporting other coaches throughout the club.

The mini rugby season has got of to a busy start. Since coming back after the school holidays in August we have attended an away friendly at Howe, a tournament at Kinross and hosted our first friendly of the season which saw Perth, Stirling and Kirkcaldy visiting. Stewarts Melville Tournament next followed by a trip up North a friendly with Mackie, then we have to concentrate on our main event, on 4th November we host our annual tournament with 9 visiting clubs and a few spares that will see almost 600 boys and girls on Station Park coming from all over Scotland including Ayr, Melrose and Aberdeen Grammar.

The club has around 100 players from P1 to P7. The P1/2 section was only really started a few years ago and is a very popular section and a great place for very young kids to pick up ball skills as well as space awareness through games. The P3s are now realising that it is a small step to making it a proper game and are overly keen to show how good they are at tackling even though they only play touch! The P4s are going from strength to strength and have enough numbers to have two teams, the Saints and the Blues. P5 & P6 are struggling for numbers this year although it seems not a week goes by when we don't get a new enquiry or someone turning up at training wanting to play. The P5s took a training session to the Active Fife Big Day Out at Kilrymont on 29th September to try and recruit new members so we are hoping that will result in increasing our numbers further. The P7s are enjoying the new 5 person scrum and line outs as well as the odd visit from ex internationalist Rob Dewey, now a local farmer with a wealth of rugby experience to pass on

Women's Rugby
There has been a considerable uptake from fresher’s and therefore more players that they can provide fixtures for, so the university team is very keen to get involved in the NDL league and have a development squad playing some entry level rugby. This is perfect for the girls new to Madras.

The experienced girls, originally training at Madras, have moved on to more established teams as they are only around for a few months.

1st XV
The First 1st XV have had a slow start to the season with a well deserved win against Carnoustie to open the season, followed by defeats against Glenrothes (narrowly) and Grangemouth, and wins over Fife Southern and Panmure last week. We are expecting to be pushing into the top 3 of the table by the end of the season.
So far this season we have recruited, much needed, younger players to the team but more playing time is needed to let the team gel together. With over 40 Players in the senior squad stability in the team and progress is being hampered by injury and availability with many people working shifts or away.
Coaching has started to improve dramatically, the boys have been coached and more structure and savvy can be seen in our games of late, although we still know we have a long way to go, we are heading in the right direction under the guidance of new coach Mike Avis.
