Heriots tournament

P7 Madrascals take a hit.

Madras travelled to Edinburgh for their annual Herriots tournament. One of the most difficult tournaments of the season and the boys had their heads down from the start.
First game was planned against Portabello but unfortunately Portabello were unable to attend the meet. Second game was against a well-disciplined Watsons. Watsons are known for their strong rucking and turnover techniques and this proved difficult for the boys to control. Watsons were hungry for a win and scored a try within the first few minutes. However a break through from Jackson Turtha gave madras the equaliser which brought it back to 1-1. After the good start things turned the other way with tackles not being made and the rucks were constantly getting turned over. Watsons No4 player gave them a lead of 3-1. In the second half Madras turned on their game to at least hold a strong Watsons team . Aaron Ramsay pulled us back to 3-2. Again Watsons drove fwd and pushed our boys all over the pitch smashing through to take the win. Final score 4-2.
Third game was against a team we had beaten a week previously after suffering badly at their home tournament. The BATS were out for blood and boy did they get it. Madras totally switched off to the game at hand and got pushed into their own half within minutes going 1-0 down. Once this had happened our boys fell apart and could not hold a strong BATS team. BATS pushed with strong rucking, tackling and speed they wanted the win. Final score 5-0 and Madras P7’s were knocked out.
Thoughts for the future. The boys went into this tournament flat so the outcome was an unfortunate knock to their confidence. Some good passing and movement of the ball but when the support was needed there was none. The boys did realise that they would not be able to go through the middle and take the contact but insisted on still trying rather than quickly offloading to the wing were they would have gained more ground. Something for the coaches to work on and we all take some responsibility for the disappointing outcome. Heads up boys take it on the chin and let’s move on.
Regards Des.
