The Sky Blues U12s finished their league campaign with a comfortable victory over Glendowan at Meadowbank Sports Arena. The home team showed their intentions early on and were an attacking force right from the first whistle. It was only a matter of time for the opening goal to be scored following the intense pressure the Sky Blues forwards were piling on the away team. The goal was registered when Ciaran Shields fired a rasping shot which the keeper could only palm away and Pearse McLarnon was on hand to score from 5 yards. The second goal followed 10 minutes later when Cormac Murphy put Alex Doherty through and he didn’t disappoint with an excellent finish into the far corner. At this point the Sky Blues thought they were home and dry and they became sloppy and lost their shape. This allowed Glendowan back into the game and they punished the home team following some sloppy defending. This sparked the ‘Wee’ Blues into action once more and Cormac Murphy extended their league with a crisp left foot drive following an incisive pass from Pearse McLarnon.

Half-time: Magherafelt Sky Blues 3 v 1 Glendowan

The Sky Blues completely dominated the second period, but they were guilty of poor defending and ill-discipline which allowed the away team a faint glimmer of hope. The Blues started the half brightly and they took a 4-1 lead when Aaron McKee got the ball wide and fed it inside to Harry Evans who played the ball over the top for Pearse McLarnon to provide a real strikers finish. Glendowan pulled one back against the run of play but the Sky Blues were capable of creating chances at any time and they duly restored their 3 goal lead when Alex Doherty who was having a barn-storming game lobbed the keeper from the edge of the box. The goal rush was still not over and Cathal Martin got in on the act finishing from close range following an Alex Doherty shot. Glendowan scored right at the death to make the final score 6 – 3 but it was a game were the Sky Blues could have scored a dozen goals given the number of chances they created. Special mention must go to Jack McCoy who put in a great all round performance with hard work, skill and vision in equal measures.
